I love a film that takes the time to tell a story so well, and this has always been a favorite. So many threads to pull on, but it never seemed too messy or complex. Appreciate the insights.

This seems to be a movie you either love or hate - I was looking forward to it for a long time but I didn’t enjoy it.

Fraser’s performance was excellent but he was surrounded by unsympathetic, unempathetic, unlikeable characters whose presence cause everyone around them pain. And I know that’s the point to a certain degree - I think the movie is trying to show how terrible circumstances can cause people to do terrible things - but it’s a tough watch and ultimately I was glad when it ended.

Check out Stalingrad (1993) and the older adaptations of All Quiet (both of these are far more closer to the book and also it's themes too). Another great anti-war film is Paths of Glory (1957) which is comparable to All Quiet in some ways.

If you haven't already seen it, Come and See (1985) is an absolute masterpiece.

I agree with you. I was thinking about the Will Smith slap. Not serious crime maybe but someone all of a sudden in front of millions slapping someone else? It is very likely he has shown similar behavior before. In the cases of Cosby and Spacey I Don’t think there is necessarily worse but there is definitely a lot more dark stuff.

This is basically the only kind of movie that Paul Schrader writes, so along those lines: THE CARD COUNTER, MASTER GARDENER, BRINGING OUT THE DEAD, AMERICAN GIGOLO.

Schrader was hugely inspired by the Robert Bresson movie PICKPOCKET:

> “The movie that was most important to me was Pickpocket because when I saw that in 1969 it made me realise that there was a connection between a religious upbringing and my profane presence. […] It almost made me realise that there was actually a place for me in filmmaking, I was a critic, and I didn’t think there was, but then I saw this movie about a guy who writes in a journal and goes out and steals stuff, and I thought, I can make something like that. Then three years later, I wrote Taxi Driver.”

He wrote about it here: http://www.paulschrader.org/articles/pdf/1969-PickPocket.pdf

Off the top of my head, movies that might fit the bill: CALVARY, IN BRUGES, THE FLORIDA PROJECT, A SERIOUS MAN, THE MASTER, BAD LIEUTENANT, THE WRESTLER, LE SAMOURAI, A SINGLE MAN, SHAME.
