Lionsgate licensed Black widow from Marvel in 2004. It hired David Hayter to write a script and Avi Arad to direct it that year before passing on the project in 2006.

Scarlett Johansson was hired to appear as Black widow in Iron Man 2 in 2009.

In 2010, Kevin Feige told interviewers that he had "discussed" a solo Black widow film with Johansson.

Feige reiterated that he wanted to make a solo film featuring the character in a 2014 interview. He also said that he'd comissioned a treatment from Nicole Perlman (who wrote the first draft of Guardians of the galaxy 1 and Captain Marvel).

Lots of creatives pitched ideas for the project. Worth a read:

Ok?

We probably would have gotten a solo film about the character if Disney hadn't left Ike Perlmutter in charge of Marvel. Perlmutter - a comitted racist - didn't believe audiences would show up for a female super hero movie:

He was wrong, in principle: people fucking love super hero movies.

>Lucy

Lucy was produced by a consortium of European production companies who believed in Johansson's ability to lead a film.

Johansson's agents probably used Lucy's performance as part of their negotiation for her salary for Black widow.

I don’t think Hollywood does this in the sense of studios - but I do think that actors and their agents probably look at projects in this way. Like ‘let’s see how you do in Lucy and show the town you can do this type of role and you’re not just the pretty lil thing and then we can try and work with Marvel on being a superhero’ - Not that this is what ScarJo did, but taking your example

Yeah I definitely think that’s my issue with modern movies. I’m 25 so I feel like I kinda grew up with those throwaway movies. So I do wanna get into the classics.

I feel that’s probably why I tend to prefer tv series to movies. I get to know the characters and kind of bond with them. I’m hoping to relate more to stories in movies, too. Which is why I’m seeking out more relatable stuff.

A good soundtrack is EVERYTHING. I’m very into music so if a movie has a good soundtrack, I’m definitely more likely to engage with and remember it. I’ll have a look into their stuff. Thank you so much!!

still pissed that the one movie that we get Jackie Chan to fight Jet li in a Hollywood film and it's in a movie about a fucking white kid who has a dream about becoming a kung fu master and hooking up with a hot asian chick.

  1. Lucy was produced by French studios and distributed by Universal. They had no vested interest in the viability of a Black Widow solo movie.
  2. Lucy was a huge hit, yet it was seven years before Black Widow finally came out, so Disney clearly wasn't influenced by Johansson's success as a solo action star.

I think Lucy was after Scarlett Johannsson was already fairly well-established as an actress.

But in general, I do think it's rare for someone to get a lead part with little history unless it's a young character with plans for multiple movies. (E.g. Harry Potter). Because starting w/ someone who's already a star is expensive.

All of the Reeve's Superman movies need this. The effects, while amazing at the time, are super dated. That said, probably not enough bucks involved to do it. Thing has to sell, and I'm not sure a revamp of these movies will do it. And they're classics, things of their eras, especially the first one. Really don't want to spoil it in my opinion. It's still pretty amazing. That entire helicopter scene...

So I'm in the pen of 'leave them alone', mostly. George wanted to polish his Star Wars nest eggs, because control freak, and could, so he did. That of all movies, Star Trek: The Motion Picture got not one but TWO Director's Editions, both making more VFX shots, the latter in 4k(!) among other changes (sounds, cuts/adds of scenes/dialog) is just astounding to me. That one. Two special cuts. How and whut. Star Trek Fans are Powerful Indeed? shrugs All I know is I was and am here for it, that movie's kinda special to me.

OOH. The Black Hole. That one could use your sprucing up, that's for sure. Love that stupid movie RIGHT UP to the end parts. Little slow, but hey, not bad for a first shot at a Sci Fi Live Action movie from Disney, and some of those effects still hold up! Just need to come up with another ending... I get the idea, but c'mon.

Anyway. Most movies can probably use a bit of sprucin'. But unless it has a way to be monetized, it's just not going to happen. And in the case of your HP example, it's just not enough bang for any bucks sent along. I would be surprised if enough HP fans would actually buy HP8 just for the few minutes we're talking about.

I say leave them alone... with grand exceptions because there's always exceptions. BvS and ZSJL come to mind. Similar to TMP, studio screwin' with it (different reasons of course) and the edits that were supposed to be in the theaters (as far as I'm concerned) wind up being much better. Well, to me anyway, there's quite a few who will still disagree, and that's fine, but that Snyder got to get the 'right ones he meant to make' out is still a good thing, you ask me.

Edit: just thought of TRON. Man. That one could use some vfx editing help for sure.

Edit2: Aw, man. The Last Starfighter. Could you imagine?

Aliens, I just can't get enough of it. Every scene, every shot every moment is perfect.

I first saw it when I was 11 and going to bed after I couldn't sleep. Not because I was scared, but because I was just so wowed by it.
