McDonagh's writing very much veers into the dark and absurd. It's a testament to how well written his characters are that they can be doing these insane things and still be relatable and understandable.

In this context I would say they mean gender to mean the “restrictions” society puts on those born male or female to do certain things or be a certain way. Men should be source of primary income, play football, get dirty, monster trucks, be in charge, etc. Women take care of children, wear dresses & make up, play with dolls, like to shop, cook, clean, etc.

Really? Peaches and roses is more what I had in mind but it went on a rant.

Frequently yes, but maybe just as frequently no and it’s just a bad movie,

The model that makes the most sense to me is encoding/decoding. Of course the author has a say but we're not just sitting here in a blank wasteland and how we interpret stuff is influenced by our own lives, just like how the author thinks was influenced by their life/culture etc.

In L.A. Confidential, Guy Pearce/Ed Exley and Russell Crowe/Bud White go along with the lie (at a Press Conference) that James Cromwell/Captain Smith was a hero, rather than a criminal. So rather than bringing down the entire Police Force, they prop it up in the hope that some good can still be achieved.

I don't think there is one song from either soundtrack that I won't listen to.

Its meant to be stupid, the movie is critical of the civil wars stupidity.

Its hilarious. So many genuinely laugh out loud moments. Maybe you just get offended easily since they mock like every race and nationality. But it's definitely funny. It is also sad at times. But mostly funny.

I saw nope with 2 people. One of them was asleep within 10 minutes and stayed that way until the movie was over. The other one was apparently the most movie illiterate person I’ve ever met, and ranted and complained about how the film made NO sense and was totally stupid. That really brought down my experience.

Were the Romans prejudiced in that way tho? They seem like they were fairly cosmopolitan.

Some my favorite "setting is practically a character" movies
Taxi driver - mid 70ies new york
The 25th hour - Early 2000's new york
Repo man- 80ies LA
Harsh times - mid 2000's LA
Boyhood - Central Texas in the late 90ies
Primer - weirdly accurate depiction of north texas early 2000's suburban engineer bros (many of my homies)
This is England - working class 80ies northern england
American movie- documentary. working class late 80ies/early 90ies wisconsin
True detective - 1st season, the scenes set in the 90ies were really period accurate (characers, sets, costumes)

They’re gay for a lot of reasons but the main one being that it makes it even harder for them to believe the 4 horsemen are telling the truth.
Makes the movie a lot more interesting imo, wouldn’t have worked nearly as well otherwise.

Well to put it in the words of George Carlin
Imagine how dumb the average person is….. now realize that half of all people are even dumber than that
So a lot of that stuff in movies checks out
