That assertion is unsupported by research: https://www.wbur.org/news/2016/03/15/massachusetts-housing-costs-local-resistance
The total tax revenue generated by new housing more than offsets the marginal cost of providing services in almost every case

Have you lived in LA? I have. People feel exactly the same. They want to own a home and have places they want to live.....to be close to friends and family.

The thumping bass in my backyard once drove me to leave my house for an entire day because it started before I woke up and no matter what I did - close the windows, shut the doors, turn the tv up - it felt like I was being physically tortured. I had the shakes and could not even hear myself think. Now I live with an oxygen therapy user. I’ll take my chances with the 18 wheelers.

Please don't pretend the spirit of your previous comments in this thread were not "well just do what I did and your can have a house." That insults the intelligence of everyone reading, and is obnoxious pedantry.

One of the tricky parts of this legislation is that the areas zoned for dense residential development must actually be developable as such. That makes sense from a legislative view, because otherwise every town would pick 50 acres of wetland and call it a day. Does this mean the town must have infrastructure that can support the development? My understanding is that this is not clear cut, and towns may well need to improve infrastructure to support the potential development. I think there are lawyers from several municipalities looking at this to gain a more clear understanding. My town does not control its own water and sewer districts, so this is not as simple as people might think. We are not unique in this.
In my town, we could be looking at a double-digit percentage increase in our population. Beyond the water and sewer we do not control, our school, fire and police departments are at capacity. Right budgets mean that our long term debt management is planned out carefully for many years based on upcoming needs, and there is not room for additional projects like new school buildings.
I really wish it was as simple as it at first appears. If it was, I would personally have no problem with the legislation.

He told me he liked the idea that someone, somewhere could be readings his diary-like ramblings, said that you can’t just plop a diary in someone’s lap. He seemed to get some validation from the posts being public. I tried to push him on whether he had any sort of motivation for having more people read his posts—and he kind of suggested it was possible—but shut his account down shortly after.
I think this combined with the number of subs he moderates (seems to be grabbing up available sub names that could blow up one day) and the frequency of his posts indicate someone desperately needing to be heard. The details of his personal life he was posting were wildly outlandish and taboo, I can’t help but think he’s largely slipped by with a number of unresolved and untreated problems and no apparent support system. Stress from his job (if he’s even being truthful about that) really seems to have broken him.

I actually don't live in Boston. I live pretty well outside of it but no town near me has sub-500k houses either.

Well it's good they addressed it at least, though requiring towns not directly serviced by the MBTA to zone for that kinda misses the whole point imo.
Like if we want to make outlying towns zone for more dense housing that's fine. I just want them to do it in a way that makes sense.

They'll do it for the discount prices on designer goods. People will stab you in the chest to get 50% off last year's Gucci sunglasses. By comparison, a little cold & rain is nothing.

Or maybe I misinterpreted what you said. Just like you are misinterpreting what I said.

When I bought a home child care was not significantly less expensive in western MA. In fact they're still some of the most expensive in the entire country. So by moving far from family you aren't avoiding that cost. Childcare is WAY too expensive in this state.

Bro I did about the same thing up here in New Hampshire.
I told myself for 15 years I wouldn't buy at the top of the market again, but fuck, it was either that or stay in the same tiny place for another 15 years.

Why not ask instead of being accusatory? My wife works for a company in Boston, though she is not expected to be in the office every day. Her commute is so far that when her company effectively put in a "maximum commute distance" she had to get grandfathered in. Her co-workers do not understand how she commutes the distance she does, and they marvel at how different our lives are compared to theirs in Boston, the cities surrounding, or Metro West.
Do some others from our community make the same commute? Yes. Is it what most people - the gross majority - consider reasonable? No. We know the lifestyle we value for our family and the career my wife loves, and we chose to make specific sacrifices to have that.

Why do you feel the need to be so unpleasant to strangers on the internet? Why act like such a tough guy?

You're taking what I said to an extreme example. Of course, if they literally can't buy a house they can't buy a house. That's not who I'm talking about.

Lately I have been thinking about how it’s kind of funny that we went from strip malls, to indoor malls, and back to glorified strip malls.
I think a lot of people avoid malls because they just want to go to the one store they want to visit, and not necessarily to walk around and browse. The new outdoor malls give the feel of them being more convenient because you don’t have to park in a garage and then walk the length of the mall to get to the store you want to go to - but yeah, parking is usually kind of rough at them and if you are going to more than one store, there’s a good chance the walk is longer.
I like the outdoor malls better, but I also decided I hate malls in general a few years back, so I’m a little biased.

In the process of closing on a 2 family in Boston. Shit is gunna cost us $800k. Monthly payments are going to be $5k. Hopefully we get a tenant fast cuz that shit is steep.
It's in livable condition, but will need a lot of stuff fixed for safety.
For background my gf and I make like $161k combined per year.
At my previous job we would have never been able to qualify. That being said everyone should check out the state's first time home buyers program. Could work for you.
The fact that the American housing market is such a huge part of our economy is stupid, and it's bound to fail again. Yet I'm diving right into it 👀

All those employers pay triple the RE tax compared to homeowners in Boston. I owe Boston nothing for my existence within its borders. Would love to have a 5 minute commute to my desktop.
What is the benefit to the state to build 100 units in 100 communities that have weak connections to get into Boston? would it not be better for the environment and for people's mental health that they have shorter commutes not longer?
creating long commutes is not a great solution to the "crisis".

My wife and I are interested. I'm a part time notary stamp collector and she cleans bird cages in her spare time. Our budget is 650k, I figure we could put some real TLC into it.
