It seems fairly obvious, but you should probably look for jobs here before you move. That way you have a much better sense of your income here and general location in the state. Boston is the hub for colleges, but we do have some scattered throughout the state. Academic jobs here are very competitive, so landing one before moving makes a lot of sense. Once you have jobs, you know roughly where you will need to live and can search the areas commutable to your jobs for housing. Nobody here can tell you what's affordable without knowing where you have to be for work. Generally the farther you are from Boston, the cheaper housing becomes. Central and western MA are much more affordable, but you have fewer high-income jobs available so most people have longer commutes as the trade off for more land and cheaper housing.

I know someone who stayed at the Courtyard Marriott in Natick for a few years. Long story, but they spoke very highly of management. You would need to call the local number, General Marriott number. Residence Inn, Springfield suites and similar would also likely provide a discount for long term (by hotel standards) stays.

So, I saw this, and I think this is it, but I remember buying it on a vacation I took in March 2006 (the vacation was for someone’s birthday, which is why I remember such a precise time frame) and this book originally came out in 2007. So now I’m like, even more confused. Was not expecting to go from “recommend funny book on Reddit” to “funny book doesn’t really exist” to “it does, but there is a tear in the space-time continuum” but there ya go.

I’m guessing it’s not a “tax”, despite what they told you, but a fee imposed by the restaurant. Somerville has had a bylaw for a while (like a decade or more) banning polystyrene/styrofoam in takeout containers and restaurants. They’ve also since banned plastic straw and stirrers, as well as plastic bags. I don’t know if they’ve fully banned plastic containers yet, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s coming soon. I suspect the restaurant is charging you a “tax” because the other materials for their takeout containers are more expensive.

I used Craigslist for years and years to find shorter term housing in the Boston area.

Just be sure while you are searching to watch out for scams.

One common one is an ad for a place that looks very nice, is suspiciously cheap, and the owner is out of the country for whatever reasons but asks you for a deposit.

Don’t pay any deposit until you physically can inspect the place.

No need to be sorry, life happens. I need to get away from my family but thankfully I’m 30 and just got a new really good job, so ultimately short term budget isn’t a major concern. I moved back to help with my dad who is is very sick with Alzheimer’s or dementia but won’t acknowledge it, and a mom and sister who are very emotionally enmeshed. But unfortunately it’s clear nobody is willing to be help, and thus I have been asked to leave
