It's not just being "said". It's a scientific factuality. You're being irrational to your own detriment.

Succeeding as in buying a house? 80k pre tax isn’t very high. It’s take home about 60k

By the time you're paying, the person behind you has probably already ordered. You don't pay right when you order

That has been completely outweighed by the cost of living here now though

Just FYI they aren’t easy and are sort of pricey. And there’s a few of them.

Most libraries offer museum passes! Definitely recommend the Harvard museum of natural history!

Really, really happy for the Mashpees prevailing in this decision. I used to work for a shellfish company that had a whole sale contract with them. Their growers were super, super friendly and would bring me with them out to their grants just to show me around when I was there just to meet them at a beach parking lot for a pick up. If you like oysters and ever see First Lights around, they are from the Mashpees and are of the highest quality.

Gotta factor in cost of living. Some districts don’t pay enough for one (single) person to make it with the cost of living.

Upton is not western Massachusetts. It is like 20 minutes east of Worcester.

Cambridge/Somerville etc it’s like $2500-3000 FT. We did part time for a bit and it was like $120-150 per day.

I grew up northwest of 495 (Leominster, Lunenburg). beautiful area, more affordable (relatively speaking, that is), still a decent amount to do (I mean, it's not the city, but it's not empty, either), and lots of great schools. Littleton and Clinton are also lovely, and closer to 495.

Houses here are 150k and up. Mortgages cost less than an apartment. Wages are relatively high thus making house payments at an 80k salary not out of reach.
Some people like being able to move around and not being tied up to a mortgage.
