Would you happen to have any advice on finding roommates? I don't know anyone else from my internship who is moving to NYC. I'm from Baltimore (hence the username) where finding your own place for $1300 a month in a relatively nicer area is not difficult at all. I think I have been looking for places for myself rather than looking for something with other people. I have a solid budget of $10k which the company is giving me to move out and rent for 3 months on top of solid hourly pay.

You’re right building literally no additional commercials units or housing means that these existing bodegas would be there forever. 🙄

You think the multi million dollar brownstones DT JC 10 min from lower manhattan would be available for pennies if they didn’t build more dense housing ?

I forget, that worked for soho right? Still the cheap drug artist den ? I mean they’ve been fighting rezoning since forever. The village? They’re still affordable, I mean don’t see any new luxury buildings there so they must be

Your account number is the only thing a company needs to switch you to an alternate energy provider. All you need to do is show them a copy of your bill (or tell them the number over the phone) and they will switch you against your will. At that point your supply charges (which pays for poles and power lines into your house) still goes to PSE&G but rather than choose the cheapest available power generator, you now buy your power from whatever company you switch to.

People sometimes do this because they want their power bill to go toward some kind of environmentally friendly company but rarely will switching ever save you money. If someone cold calls or approaches you, it's a scam.

1BR From 3400-> $3800 per month. Doorman building near exchange place/ Grove Street/ Newport PATH general area.

My partner wants a doorman building due to sense of safety so I'm stuck with these crazy high rise rents.

I dream of ~3 years ago when a 3 BR 2BA I split with roommates in the best location in a subway rich area of NYC was nearly the same price all in ($4300 total now it's going for $6k last I checked).

What happens when you get hit by a car, but it’s not enough to go to the hospital? Do you exchange insurance information? Do you sue the driver? Do you call the police?

It feels like they should not drive away with peace of mind.

Last time I did it Parking Authority gave me a phone number to call (I think you just call Parking Authority? Can't remember for sure). So if that happens just call them, they'll try to contact the owner of the vehicle to move it and/or ticket them.

To be fair I had no problems with this, people either avoided parking there or they just kind of idled temporarily before the moving truck came by.

I agree - I’m convinced that with a little bit of enforcement drivers would stop treating downtown as some kind of lawless shortcut freeway…OP - this happened to me so frequently I stopped walking through the Hamilton Park / Harismus Cove area altogether because my life just felt too threatened on a daily basis. I take Newark Ave now, which feels slightly safer.

Specifically on 2nd and Monmouth: If you're crossing Monmouth, just wait until both traffic lights turn red because one turns red while the other remains green.

1st street between Coles and Monmouth has poor street lighting at night, tho. Otherwise, fine.

Yeah I'm in JSQ and run Montgomery down Columbus and then go to hoboken.

Or I do loops around liberty or Lincoln Park

30min also is highly dependent on pace.

Like, do people actually not understand the massive discounts that were being offered in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID? Rents were obviously going to normalize when the world went back to normal, people.
