I had a great experience with Leilani Chin. She negotiated with my landlord to cover the broker fee and reduce security deposit to 1 month. May have been a fluke but it was awesome.

Dulce's hours are also the best of any bakery/cafe in town (afaik). Really enjoy grabbing a treat and reading a book there for 20-30 minutes after work.

I think they do 90% of their business on the weekend - so why stay open and waste food on slower days of the week?

They’re easily one of the best in the area for breakfast sandwiches and baked goods.

Some personal faves:

  • The Bacon Bun
  • Cinnamon Rolls & Donut Twists (in any flavor) when they have them
  • Vanilla Malt Cookies
  • Cardamom Lemonade

I think the fatal flaw of District Kitchen is simply its location within the Harborside complex. No one really wants to walk deep inside a sterile office building to go to a food court, especially if it feels like you’re walking through an airport terminal. This only works when you have a captive audience of office workers that’s large enough to sustain it without having to rely on the patronage of outsiders and weekend visitors.

They should have put it at the south end of the building, which faces Columbus Dr and is right next to the Exchange Place PATH. That would drive more foot traffic because it would be a lot more convenient and visible to people commuting by bus and PATH, as well as for people who live in Paulus Hook.

To me, the renovation of that whole building complex is like putting lipstick on a pig. They should have bulldozed it and started from a clean slate. The area should be built with a smaller scale street grid that’s more in keeping with the historic parts of downtown. That would have made it feel more like an actual neighborhood that people want to spend time in.

There is a brown Australian named Benji who is known in the area to have aggressive behavior. He is usually accompanied by a tan middle aged woman named Rossy. I believe that the owner has been asked not to take the dog to any Hudson County dog parks.

Our bill has gone up a bit compared to previous years but nothing like what you are describing. We just had our largest winter bill ever at $175 for the period from mid-Dec to mid-january. Our most current bill (mid-Jan to mid-Feb) just posted and it was $140. Our usual Winter bills are normally around $100, but we have spent a lot more time at home these two months compared to last year (which is reflected in the increased usage) and our new place is ALL electric, whereas our previous one had gas stove/oven. Overall, I calculated we have seen a 10% increase in cost when all is factored in, which is more or less in line with the PSE&G rate increase.
