They do pretty well in their demographic. It’s obvious people come from outside JC to save on taxes for back to school and holiday shopping.
Those price sensitive folks aren’t looking for Prada and Rolex.

Either a car not stopping one way, or an electric bike zooming in the opposite. Good to look both ways always.

A great question! My Chinese family says American-invented Fortune cookies were handmade and only in the United States are they a dessert giveaway. And, since the older workers retired, there has been few new workers to learn how to fold HOT soft cookie sheets into fortune cookies. Also, factories dedicated to making fortune cookies, once upon a time located in lower east side of New York City, now million dollar condos. Price of butter up, too, not worth giving away. No cookies for you, Jersey City!

This is a skill I remind my friends visiting from out of town on. It's an omni directional check no matter if it's a one way, not looking at phones in crosswalks kinda place.

While crossing grand, I had someone nudging into the crosswalk yell at me to 'hurry the fuck up so I can turn, or I'll run you over' so they could make a left on red. This was during the middle of the day when school kids were going home. Fuck someone needs to enforce some sort of traffic laws here, it just emboldens the worst possible people

I've had someone stop their car and try to fist fight me, because I dared walk in a cross walk while they were trying to floor it. I did yell slow the fuck down at him, so I guess I was really asking for it?

It's been like this for years. My friend almost got hit once and slapped the back of the car. The driver stopped to get out and approach him, but he just went into his building before they could get to him.

The good old "I'm not mad, just disappointed" is still very effective. Might bring back bad childhood memories, I guess.

The gall of the oped writer to put himself on the same level as Amy DeGise. The patriarchy is strong with this one.

Thanks for such a long, thoughtful, and non confrontational response.
>I think there will have to be a law that ebikes can not ride more than 9mph on the sidewalk. Or $75 minimum fine.
Who's going to enforce this? Especially when these motor vehicles do not have any license plate identifying them, not that that's even very effective on cars these days when all sorts of clever methods of obscuring the plate are available, and even simple ones like a smoked plastic cover do not get ticketed by law enforcement.
I wish there was an answer other than law enforcement personnel. But it seems that we live in an era of entitlement where everyone tries to get away with absolutely every single thing they can, and the fact that it affects other people negatively seems not to matter, everyone is the star of their own movie, and other people are just extras at best.

Of course. But it’s not as simple as “be a better owner” and show them good cues. They need consistent positive reinforcement and training. And fireworks and thunder can be very tough with some dogs no matter how good the owner is.
The worst dog owners in this city are the ones that think they are so good at training they can let their dogs off leash wherever/whenever they wish.

you'd think commercial drivers care if you got their plate? their boss probably tells 'em to run pedestrians down.

As bad as JC is it’s 100 times worse in Newark. NJ in general is embarrassing for how badly drivers ignore pedestrians in crosswalks. Meanwhile I was in California for a few months and if I even looked towards a crosswalk as a pedestrian drivers would come to a complete stop and wait for me to cross. Kind of pathetic seeing as NJ is much more urbanized and dense than California

Not at all… but what about war vets who suffer PTSD. Do you not care about how they have to deal with these fireworks without notice.

I lived in LUXURY buildings in other states and they all did the same thing.
Although often it's even more of a scam --- instead of "$XXX for good review", it can be "your chance to win $XXX for a good review" which means only one resident gets the money, and certainly someone the management likes.

It’s all over the region. I was in Weehawken a block from my home, crossing in a crosswalk clearly marked “state law stop for pedestrians.” I walked out, the guy swerved around me then stopped to yell, “don’t be an asshole.” I’m the one who nearly got hit, yet I am supposed to be the asshole here. LOL.

Lmaoo. I deliver by ebike and agree. I see a lot of other ebike couriers ride on people's heels as they walk. Ride up on kids. It surprises me. No $8-$25 order is worth rushing like that. Or maybe caffeine intolerance. I can't fathom tbh.
I, otoh, got hit by a lady three weeks ago who was kind enough to run a stop sign on me. Now I have a fractured rib and an accident case (will likely edit or delete this comment).
But you have to consider, Hudson county has about 700k people in it. And we have mentioned the reality of JCPD's absence in local traffic patrol. I believe they don't patrol traffic because they can't afford to create hiccups. In terms of flow of traffic and even violence. A few months ago I was walking to my apt when a news caster stopped me to ask me if I knew about this accident he was reporting on in which two guys had some road rage argument about a parking spot. Once guy punched and killed the other actually in self defense and he was charged manslaughter. The hostility in Jersey city might be the real issue. and I understand why it exists but that can't be remedied so easily.
I think there will have to be a law that ebikes can not ride more than 9mph on the sidewalk. Or $75 minimum fine. Idk if ebikes will ever have to be registered but in 5 years bike lanes are going to invade like moss. Construction sucks but it would help. Jc is still in the infancy of it's development/gentrification. I used to live in Paulus hook 5 years ago. Completely different already. The city is already too wealthy to not be revamped and progressives don't want city miles. In 15 years I actually think it will become a bike city. Everyone thinks Texas is ridiculous, you need a car for what would be a 5 minute walk. It is still jersey though so there will always obviously be cars.
Man I could even speak on how ridiculous the car industry is. I drive too (not for work) and I personally believe only 2/5 of people who drive should be allowed to own personal vehicles. But it seems the auto industry is such a pillar of the country's credit that they'll let anyone drive. That and all the areas designed for car ownership... Like I popped a curb in my driving test when I was 16 and still got my permit.
I'm about to head out to deliver on my bike now and I am not looking fwd to it. I hate the cars, I hate the people, but I like it all a lot in other ways. I'm trying to dig myself out of my current financial hole atm. Delivering was only supposed to be a back up plan. There looks to be a surplus of delivery people right now. I do think the apps deserve some responsibility. Some of them put you on a wait-list but not for long. They function on revolving door hiring. You should read the NYT article about the billions Uber has poured into psychological research to keep their "freelancers" working around the clock.
Thankful this thread exists and for the links shared bc I think about this issue every day and spend many hours facing it's realities.

The moment got put a person in a car they lose a lot of the rationality they have. I'm guilty of getting upset mostly at other drivers in a way I wouldn't outside of a car too. But man some people are the fucking worst.
2 years ago they didn't close off Paulus Hook during 4th of July so the entire area became a giant traffic jam. At 2AM there were still people stuck in traffic and several of them kept honking their horns. It wasn't even like people weren't moving at a light or something, they were just 20 cars back waiting for people to take turns at the stop sign. I wanted to just throw a brick at some of the cars because what the fuck were they achieving with constant honking at 2AM.

Same experience, but with Texas. If you are anywhere near the crosswalk, and a driver thinks you are going to enter the crosswalk, they stop dead on their tracks and wait for you. It was so bewildering at first. After living there for 5+ years, it was a bit of a culture shock to have to adjust back to being on the defensive at all times when walking around town. Another funny/interesting one is yielding to emergency vehicles. In San Antonio, people on BOTH sides of the road will pull over to allow ambulances and fire trucks the widest path possible. And, they don't start moving again until the emergency vehicle is well on its way. When I came back here, and pulled over at the sight of an ambulance that was flashing its light, the guy behind me got enraged and laid on its horn. The level of pent up anger / aggression in this area is really eye opening.
