I would assume you have to get their consent as well?.

What if they initially consent and then decide that they're bothered by it? What if they move and you get new neighbors?

If you want to go the smaller building route and aren’t confident to DIY, the surest way to do such a thing would be to go through a broker. A rental broker will find listings on the MLS that meet your criteria, arrange showings, help you evaluate the units, and sometimes can even negotiate a slightly better deal for you. A broker generally charges the equivalent of one-month’s rent, but if you have a good broker they’ll try to negotiate that the landlord pays their fee instead of you.

Reply to Jersey City (Crime over the years) by DarthGabe2142
25 years ago, Jersey City was the poorest city in America, so, yes, there was a lot of crime (as there was in cities nationwide in that era). Then after 9/11, a lot of Wall Street firms that had been in or near the WTC moved here, so it was the poorest city in America, plus Wall Street. In the intervening decades, the middle (and in particular the upper middle) has filled in quite a bit.
And the result has been a precipitous drop in crime. The overall crime rate is about half what it was in 2005, and there were 12 murders in the whole city in 2022, which might be the lowest number in the entire history of Jersey City.

Chengdu 1 is the only Chinese place in JC worth ordering from. Maybe Food King.

I appreciate this! I was considering the larger complexes simply because I have more anecdotal reviews of them and don't trust myself to find a good apartment without some word from others (I'm a little dumb, and certainly naive when it comes to renting).
Is there a generally accepted way on how to find and vet these apartments?

Which is why the ordinance says you can have a coop if you're neighbors give written consent.

With a budget like yours, you could either do a studio in some of the fanciest high rise buildings around such as 70 Columbus, or get yourself a nice 2BR apartment with a backyard in an historic brownstone in Van Vorst Park. I’d personally opt for the brownstone.

Grove pointe’s fine. Bit older than some of the older “luxury” buildings but location is great, rent is a bit lower (should be able to swing a 1Br for your budget), and units tend to be bigger.

That's not true. You're not always going to have table scraps to feed them.
And again, the enjoyment of your backyard is greatly diminished when there's a chicken coop just over the fence. The neighborhoods you mentioned don't have backyards more than a maybe 200 sq feet if at that. Neighbors will hear them and smell them.

The spicy dishes I get from there are reasonably hot, the triple pepper chicken is way hot. Some places sure are variable though, Fortune makes a sometimes great mongolian chicken. Sometimes they put in enough of whatever sour paste makes it tasty, sometimes it's bland, total crapshoot. I've tried saying "strong flavor!!" when I order, no go.
At least King Szechuan is pretty authentic, I once got Kung Pao on the road that was 'brown sauce #1" with half a bottle of Red Hot tossed in, I swear it was orange.

Miss America on West Side holds the fort as the last true diner in this town.
The food is fine.* Not great, not even particularly good, just fine. It's a diner. Fast, cheap, filling.
