So let’s see here, you absolutely cannot EQ those technicalities with our current extremely smooth graphs because you cannot even tell me where they are. So that is an outright lie.

Yes, if your hearing is not capable of discerning details then I would certainly buy the one that costs way less. Also, if they are already close enough then why would one be better than the other given a certain song?

Yes I would agree that they would be the same if we could perfectly measure a headphone (we cannot) and we could perfectly EQ a headphone (we cannot) so why even make the statement? If they both had the same FR, they would be the same headphone. The point is that even if you EQd the to try to match the smooth target you are missing the fine grained details that make all of the difference.

The quarks are a great budget IEM with excellent tonal balance. Nothing more.

It sounds like tonal balance is all that matters to you which makes sense why the quarks are all you need. Makes you look like a fool for owning those HD800 though. Why even own it?

Oh, I have plenty of good headphones, lol. The issue is that I work at a grocery store and I don’t want to bring an actually good pair of headphones there. Too much traffic. I mainly enjoyed the crushers for their meme potential- it was fun to show people what “too bassy” actually means, lol

The secret to audio bliss is to find something decent, get used to it, and then just listen to the music with realistic expectations. Selling all the gear we have and settling for cheap stuff is bogus, and a lot of us here find great joy in tinkering and researching gear.

Good luck with your decision. I truly hope you find and/or keep your bliss, but your method is not a one-size-fits-all.

Why do you call it a $20 IEM as if it is an insult? That just makes it all the more groundbreaking. It is an extreme revolution in price/performance as it is better than the vast majority of IEMs including ones that are 100x the price.

What kind of thing are you looking for to qualify as "groundbreaking"?

Thanks. Just saw them on google when I was trying to find the name of Headphone Bar. Will definitely check them out too. I like to make the trips there as worthwhile as possible since it's about a 3.5 hr drive and we only get down there once a year or so. I plan to buy an "end game" headphone at some point but so far haven't heard anything past my 6XX and am very curious to see where the diminishing returns kick in for myself.

No, it's funny because it's such a hilariously awful approach to such a serious topic in what was supposed to be a comedy comic.

Ah sorry I forgot they use xbox wireless now instead.

It's a higher bandwidth but from what little information Microsoft has released about it, it doesn't appear to be lossless and does use compression for the audio transfer which might negatively impact sound.

So, you should see quite an improvement to the gx with an amp. I can't find the specifications for the controllers 3.5mm output but being so cheap and small I'd be surprised if it output anything over 1mw.

Having to use them at max volume greatly increases the chance for distortion. So an amplifier will deliver the necessary power to make the gx sing. I'd still personally recommend a dac as well (or a combo unit) just so that you have as clean a chain as you can, after all those headphones can be quite revealing and adding an amp to the controller output might exacerbate discrepancies in sound.

Depending how much you want to spend, a fiio k5 pro would be a pretty affordable little unit.

Also, if your TV doesn't have optical out, you can use a hdmi splitter to create your own. No usb or wireless dacs work with the xbox as far as I can't tell.

That’s one hell of an ad for Fiio and Hifiman…

#I’M JOKING!!!!

But in all reality, I’m touched by your story. Truly resonates with me. I most likely wouldn’t be here today had it not been for my love of music and headphones. Even though I already had a pair of Bose On Ear headphones in high school, the Sennheiser HD 598 I got for Christmas made me realize “hmm… maybe life is still worth living.”

A few years of therapy and dozens of headphones later definitely helped me. Now I just sit down and listen to music with planars and a tube amp. My problems and toxic people who cause said problems can go fuck themselves 🙃

Sorry to hear that happened and they're being the way they are.

I would recommend:

JDS Labs Atom+

Topping L30II

Fiio K5/K7

Geshelli Labs Archel/ENOG (<-- these are extra cool bc made in USA and you can customize)
