Look at Chi-Fi, all of the performance without the corner cutting you get from stuff made in the US. Topping and Fiio have great options, I have a Topping A90 and Fiio K5 Pro myself.

The new Fiio K7 looks great for $199. I think it looks well worth it over the K5 Pro, balanced, much more power out of that output, much lower noise and distortion.

From Topping, the DX3 Pro+ for the same price loses the balanced but gains Bluetooth.

If you don't need the DAC portion, the Topping L30 II amp-only for $149 looks great, single ended only but 3.5W and it can even survive exploding and continue to work normally with no harm to amp or headphones.

I wouldn't try to convince them with words but by letting them hear gear I have experienced and let them decide for themselves. I would have them listen to the Rode NTH-100 as a comparison to budget gear to start. Then I would move on to the Austrian Audio Hi-X60, Sennheiser HD8xx, Audeze LCD-2 Closed, Dan Clark Ether C, Rosson RAD-0, Audeze LCD-5. I would use the Mytek Liberty DAC ii and HeadAmp GS-X Mini. I would play music from my reference playlist: https://www.thehonestaudiophile.com/post/does-your-music-preference-impact-your-sound-impressions

Staying in the $200 price range is a tough one, especially for closed back options.

Yes, I’ve tried it out (briefly). It’s definitely an improvement in the treble, but I prefer the lower end the way it is naturally. I’ve tried to modify it a bit, but haven’t entirely succeeded yet. One good thing is that the EQ seems to change the soundstage of the NDH very little.

I’ll definitely have to look into EQing the HD 800 as well when I get around to trying it more. Oratory‘s presets are usually a good starting point for me.

Did you try the Oratory1990’s EQ with the NDH 30, it supposedly fixes some minor dips and makes the treble more prominent? I haven’t tried it myself as the headphone sounds great as is to me.

I did try Oratory1990’s EQ for the HD800S since it can sound so unnatural at times, but it kinda sucks out the sound for my pair, making it kinda muffled and weird sounding in most tracks. A little bass boost and a taming the treble a bit with the stock EQ helps a lot without impacting the overall sound or soundstage.

No need for a matching box. If you watch your volume, direct wire from the taps is best.

Cheap speaker amps might have a higher noise floor, but the higher end stuff is almost invariably better than high-end headphone amps, being over-engineered to drive harder loads.

If they really don’t sell them in Mexico for some reason, maybe you can have them shipped to someone in the US (or Estados Pudridos as I like to call it) then have them send it to you. Or maybe use one of those mail forwarding companies but that can get really expensive and probably not worth it.

Interesting! I think if the NDH had just a tad more treble across the upper spectrum my impression would be far more favorable (since the lower end is excellent). I guess that falls within the margins of subjectivity.

That said, I have some qualms with the HD 800S myself (from memory, haven’t really tried out my set properly), since the tonality is downright unpleasant for some music when unEQd.
