Amazing you went on a ~$6k headphone journey to end back at the $240 6XX.

Truly appreciate this OP as someone who just got into this hobby and has only tried 660S (kept) & Sundaras (returned). Confirming my plan to keep these puppies for a while and maybe, just maybe, move up to the Edition XS / Arya one day if I want another planar.

One other note since you implied you're a Mac user - SoundSource is amazing for EQing. Comes prebuilt with a ton of EQ profiles (crinacle & oratory1990 for example) that you can just click into and instantly apply with no extra work. Pretty nifty for A/Bing different EQ settings.

The comic itself is not supposed to be funny at all. But it became famous because the artist was known for funny and light hearted comics, and once something becomes famous memes follow.

Yeah, take any recent DAC chip schematics and get sad because most modern delta-sigma DACs are not 1 bit and they do not support DSD direct (ESS Sabre chips all play DSD pre-processed for example). And the circuit is not much shorter. And you didn't even consider looking at how ADCs work, which is another potentially very interesting story...

>DSD take far more samples per second during recording.

1 bit samples, might you. Which do not replicate sound wave in any way, unlike PCM.

I love my 600's. I make it a point to listen to them 3 or 4 days of the week. They are what got me into the rabbit hole. Don't get me wrong i absolutely love my Clear MG's but for the longer sessions the 600's just disappear on my head. They will always have a place in my modest collection.

But true. I really wish sometimes that I couldn’t hear the difference between lossy or CD or records or hi-res digital. It would save me a lot of money

I get not wanting to stick with Schiit, but it seems to me (both first hand experience, and anecdotal online) that their next level up gear is much more reliable. I have been using as Asgard 2 and Valhalla 2 for several years now, and really can't think of seeing any reports of them dying (not that I've gone looking for them). They also get a 5 year warranty at that level.

If you want to go a different route, the Fiio K5 And K7 are both well regarded, and I liked both quite a bit. JDS is very good and has excellent support, I've never had an Atom, but had a OG El Stack.

Topping seems to have as many issues reported as Schiit and I haven't heard much of their newer stuff, but I didn't think their older stuff (original d30 and a30 and an nx4) sounded all that good.

before you invest in SUPER expensive cables. First try a pair of OFC copper and Pure Silver. If you can't tell the difference between them, you likely shouldn't keep spending more $$ on Cryo treated $580+ X Symphony Pure Silvers. haha

>DSD is an archiving format for analog sources, it does not have any other use cases. It does not do anything better than PCM in terms of sound. "Better approximation", "more information" and "less digital processing and filtering" - all of this is complete nonsense.

No, it's not. Take any recent DAC chip schematics, and you will see that the DSD circuit is shorter than the PCM one.

DSD take far more samples per second during recording. Of course, it's going to retain more information. You can't argue that

They specifically sound fairly muddy because they have a fair bit of THD that results from the use of tubes. Hence the suggestion. If trying to go for a fairly clear but still tubey sound, then Bottlehead Crack, Shortest Way 51+, or Woo Audio 6 - but those are all quite pricy comparing to budget OP is reasoning about.

I've been using the original k550s for 11 years now. I wasn't especially careful with them but had no big issues. Of course the pads had to be replaced couple of times and there's a crack on the plastic part of the headband that doesn't really affect anything, otherwise still going strong
