FF9 is a bit of a homage to the FF series, it took a heap of the tropes and mechanics from previous entries and repackaged them into something (I'd say) pretty special.

Magic medevilism with a mechanopunk flavour and political intrigue that gives way to world altering batshit crazy pomp.

I think that's a good place to start

Don't know what genre you liked originally so a bit hard to recommend.

Wild shot answer from me though would be Ghost of Tsushima. It might be a bit longer than you're looking for but the quest (renown) system in the game makes it so I feel like I get something done within like 30 minutes of playing. That has really gotten me to play the game with some consistency.

Final Fantasy 7, 9, and 10 are good classics. 7 and 9 are my absolute favorites. 10 was groundbreaking at the time for its graphics and voice acting. FF12 is good but also very grindy.

For more modern stuff: 15 is very beautiful but the story is garbage. FF13, 13-2, 13-3 are hot garbage.

If you want to check out other JRPGs that are modern, try Persona 5, Nier Automata, FF7 Remake. I think the OG FF7 is much, much better story wise though. A lot of things got lost in the remake. Character personalities changed, dialogue became much more “anime-y”, it was more raw and human in the original. The remake’s combat system is more fun though.

I always saw it as a positive. Japan made them popular, and when i saw jrpg i was much more interested than just rpg.

Of course, i am not japanese game dev but i seriously saw it a kudos to them for accomplishing something interesting and different enough to warrant its own category.

Saddens me that it was seen as derogatory. It was never my intent when i used the term.

This.

If you don't want to pay MSRP, like... Fucking don't. Nobody's got a gun to your head and there's literally hundreds of games for under $10. Like right now, on PSN, I can buy Street Fighter V, Burnout Paradise, and Persona 5 for under $25.

If you'd told SNES me he could have the latest copy of Street Fighter, a great racing game, and one of the hottest JRPGs for that price way back in the day I'd have assumed I was getting stolen goods, even as a snot-nosed twelve year old.
