Wow, so about 1% of their staff are on direct assistance? That's a lot of folks they're letting down.

Would Lakota count as a "foreign" language for this chart i wonder, it may be a "second" language but it's definitely not "foreign".

Another way to look at it. On average, for every $ spent there, approximately:
-
76¢ went to the supplier of the good
-
21¢ went to other costs (wages, utilities, etc.)
-
1¢ went to corporate income taxes
-
3¢ went to Wal-Mart finances

It’s specific enough to not be remembered for a student in Oregon or Connecticut to not be taught. In Georgia it’s a very significant part of the local history.
It was highlighted on a national scale as well in the mid 80’s when Oprah came to Forsyth and ran an episode about the history of Forsyth county.

This is specific enough to not be remember and small scale enough not to be taught.

Turkey is worst than Belarus and Russia, both dictatorships.

Exactly! Yes, I think it was the fear you mentioned that kept Mama's generation from being taught Italian. I'm going a long way back: Mama was born in '46, which was really not that long after the Immigration Acts of '21 and '24 which were aimed at keeping people like my family out of the country. If no dogs or Italians were allowed, maybe don't teach the kids Italian.
I took Spanish in 8th grade in Wyoming in the 80's and didn't learn a damned thing. I can't help but wonder if it was too late, that second languages need to be learned either young or by pure immersion.
I did end up with a fairly strange accent. I speak fluent hick but it's peppered with Brooklynite idioms and accents.

Walmart has over 2.2 million employees, of which between 14,500 and 25,000 receive SNAP, Medicaid, or state welfare program assistance.

Yeah I just saw that too funny enough. Even still though, 11 billion dollars I mean even with just conservative investment compound interest alone would generate such wealth. And this is off one year.
The amounts of money is so staggering.

Agree - their net income looks even tinier in the visual because it's just 2% of revenue.
But its 11 billion dollars.

I think what's funny/interesting here is despite the visual, in reality 20 billion dollars is a substantial and incredible amount of money.

As of last month they claim $14/hr (depends on location) but historically their employees take in something like $6B in direct assistance, not including subsidized programs.

My parents' generation immigrated to the U.S. and my older cousins were purposely kept from learning our native language (Vietnamese) out of fear that leaning it would hinder their ability to integrate into English-speaking society. From my own experience, in contrast to some of the anecdotes I've read here, it would have been impossible not to pick up native English fluency being born and raised here and attending public school. I'm grateful for every bit of Vietnamese fluency I still retain as much of it fades from my memory banks.

What the chart fails to capture is that while I would trust pasta made in Italy, I wouldn't necessarily go for an Italian computer chip. Each country has its specialties which makes real life (and tracking real consumer preferences) more difficult than this simple chart would suggest.

I grew up in Georgia with the majority of my education taking place in the 90s. There wasn’t a peep about this. I honestly think I learned about it watching something on public television within the last few years.

Huh, they made more in profit than their employees take in on welfare. I guess they could afford to pay at least welfare level wages.
