I didn't say anyone was in the wrong, I was just asking a question. I'm absolutely the asshole here; I just wanted to make sure I wasn't actually getting anyone in real trouble with the 2 free rides I've taken in the last 6 months, or if they're giving me the stink eye because they don't have class solidarity.

As for the gesture, I didn't see it that way before, but I guess you're right. Dunno what someone should do in that situation then. Just ask? Anything is better than trying to sneak on right?

For what it's worth, I just got a Charlie card a few minutes ago. I'm not cheap, just forgetful, and not from here. I won't be needing a free ride again any time soon.

I think the length of the line is a part of the problem though, the number of trains needed to keep the line running frequently enough to make it convenient would be so high compared to ridership that it wouldn’t make sense as an investment in space and resources.

I mean, you're trying to justify not paying your fare because you can't be arsed to get a Charlie card (or have your girlfriend get one for you). I don't really see how the bus drivers are in the wrong here. Their job is to collect fares and stop at the stops so the passengers can get on and off. You put them in a difficult position by asking them if they'll let you get away with not paying the fare. They have a route to drive, and they don't want to waste time arguing, but they're supposed to be collecting fares from all of the passengers.

Anyway, you giving them the namaste gesture and asking to ride for free just makes you look like an entitled asshole.

Honestly, unless it’s Dave or Buster complaining, I have a hard time believing anybody complaining can realistically complain about this development going up in “our neighborhood.”

The area is already set up to handle massive volume due to the mall, and there’s enough dead space all around to put physical plant support in place without any resident actually seeing anything except the designed exteriors of the buildings.

It will get built im sure, the declining fortunes of the mall are not good for Braintree’s bottom line, even if the loudest voices in the room are all negative.

I mean the problem to me is that real solutions involve tradeoff and piss off the losers.

We need massively more units of housing, hundreds of thousands, which will require annoying the nimby's and neighborhood defenders, building over thousands of single family homes and two story businesses, etc. (I also think they should not have many affordable units; the affordability benefits should come by bending the supply:demand ratio, not from creating stupid lotteries.)

Likewise, real police reform isn't possible without pissing off the police.

Likewise, a real Green New Deal school building program will require hiring mid and late-career professionals, pissing off the campaign staffers who wanted patronage.

Don't get me started on busing, school and neighborhood integration, or bike lanes.

She's too ambitious, and maybe too much of a lightning rod, to accept those tradeoffs. The former is on her; the latter rooted in class, race, gender, and just weird GOP conservative insanity, and I feel bad for Wu on that stuff. She should be able to make hard decisions without jagoffs threatening her and her family, expressly or implicitly. I loathe the bullhorn brigade because they unduly constrain Wu's policy choices (also they're just assholes). But I roll my eyes at Wu's please-them-all attitude, too.
