I wasn’t aware SF and LA were laughing stocks of America. Right wing talking points, sure. But these problems are systemic. They aren’t just happening in a few cities. Venture outside of the Northeast or west coast and see how you like the quality of life there… you won’t.

High quality of living, good social infrastructure, easy access, proper seasons, diverse industry, top educational resources, and great cultural resources... it's desirable to live here.

For example, you ever have to go to the ER at a specialized hospital here? You have people in the waiting room from three states away.

I do worry about Boston turning into San Fran, but industry is too diverse here to be entitled to one type of bro.

Not so much LA because LA sucks.

The only people who think San Francisco and LA are the “laughing stock of America” are conservatives who never leave their hometowns.

The only thing that makes Boston similar to either of those places is the cost of living. Rents and home prices are driven by demand so obviously there are plenty of people who still want to live here and can afford it.

Some people don’t get how this could be a human trafficking pitch which is understandable.

If you don’t get it:

Think about when you’ve genuinely been lost and asked for directions. What details do you include or ask for?

Directions. That’s it.

Something like “late for an appointment” maybe.

But people don’t:

  • ask where people live
  • ask for people to personally escort them there
  • mention terms like “wealthy client”
  • target young women traveling alone

I get asked for directions all the time, especially when the school year starts, because I work and commute near some major colleges. It’s always a question of how to get to a street or a building. They never ask where I live or ask me to walk them somewhere.

Never go to the secondary location.

When I lived in Back Bay we’d go late at night, after the bars closed. We all owned skates just for that, and we’d stop home and get them then hop the boards at like 3am. Cops never bothered us but the stupid Zamboni chased us off more than once. Kinda weird to Zamboni at 3:00am, but it probably doubled as security because it worked lol.

>I moved here

So did thousands of others in the past 20 years. Why do you think rents and the cost of housing is so high (along with the availability of housing)?

>homeless and drug epidemic

Gentrification brought on by the people moving here wouldn't have anything to do with it, would it?

You know there's a vast swath of Jewish Americans who don't keep Kosher to that extent right?

There's an entire cuisine theory about how immigrants had to modify their food after coming to America because of available ingredients. And how that doesn't make it any less authentic, it's just changed the category of what's authentic. Trying to gatekeep what is and isn't authentic gets ridiculous fast, because how far back do you go? "Authentic" Italian food doesn't have tomatoes because they came from America, etc.
