Reply to Would I be considered an anti-semitic hypocrite to consider myself a LOTR fan (still reading the two towers) and not a Harry Potter fan?) by [deleted]
So you think you ought not like Tolkien because he wrote fantasy stories before anyone conceived of trans-people? That means you pretty well have to chuck all literature written before 2010 or so. That seems a bit unreasonable to me.

It’s not that deep. They’re just books/stories. At this point you probably already own the books anyway. You’re also talking about analysing a mythology that was written before a single bullet was fired in World War 2 by today’s standards. To put into perspective as well when Tolkien started writing all women in Britain had only had the vote for less than a decade.
Im not sure if you’re just stuck in certain internet bubbles but outside of certain sections of the internet I’d say 99.9 percent of the population of every country on earth would not bat an eyelid at all (in the context of you being anti semetic) if you said you were a fan of the Lord of the Rings.

Not really sure! Tolkien may have been a product of his time. I always enjoyed his works and never did get into HP. I don't find his work overtly racist or anti-semitic, though with research, one might notice these things.

First heard of Ballard ages ago when I got caught up with Joy Division. They had "Atrocity Exhibition" on Closer, I think.

Reply to What obscure kids' novel stuck with you (literally) into adulthood? (Potential TW of child neglect) by DerpiestLilDhampir
Son of the Phantom. It's a novelization of the comic book "The Phantom" (also fairly obscure- although they did make a movie about the character, staring Billy Zane).
The book was completely unrelated to the comic book character. And honestly, it probably wasn't all that good. To ten-year-old me, it was the coolest thing ever. I sure wished I could have been the son of a costumed hero deep in the jungles of Africa, come back to America, become a hero on the football field, win the hand of the prettiest girl in school, and then move back to battle the bad guys (because it'd be my duty, of course).
I lost it decades ago to a tomcat who decided my bookcase was the best place to spray his ball musk. It's probably not nearly as good as I remember, so maybe that's not a bad thing.

Don't kill the messenger :)
But Ballard would be a great addition to this iceberg.

I’m not trying to pick fights it’s a genuine question and I want to know. Jewish people can contribute in the comments if you want. I value opinions like yours especially on this topic.

But you must admit his ideas presented in 1984 was subversive as f*** back in the days when he wrote the book?

When I brought it back to the library they kind of acted like maybe the book was too complicated for me until I showed them. Incredible.

If your only issue is who gets the money you can always just buy both IP’s products 2nd hand. If your issue is based on the principal of not supporting those people in any way based on their beliefs than I’d say yes that’s hypocritical.
Id leave the decision of wether you want to support either IP up to yourself though.

Harris was pretty much forced into writing the book against his will, so he probably didn't care too much about making sure it lined up perfectly with the previous ones

Miri is honestly kind of unlikeable, tbh. I mean, in the way that most people would probably be unlikeable if we were subject to their every thought, lol.
I was always hungry for Leah's chapters because I was like "TELL US WHAT HAPPENED, DAMNIT" although I was also working on appreciating the description of their relationship.
I think I might appreciate Miri's section even more if I re-read it since I won't be intrigued about what happened in the submarine.
I love long books and I wasn't ready for this to be over... but I think I agree with you... I would probably like it a lot less if it were longer.

I just don’t see 1984 by George Orwell as being all that obscure, much less at the very bottom.

Regarding LOTR I understand the part about LOTR mythology being a mythology. But the part about books just being books, I grew up with Harry Potter and read it in middle school and started reading Tolkien last year before the pandemic, (I didn’t know it was anti demerit until people started talking about it on the internet. There wasn’t a lot of Jewish people in my life back when I read the books so I didn’t understand.
