"as a party guest, even better" had me rolling but yeah, his poetry can only be inspired at most by Yeats, but nothing like him

Retirement is probably the perfect time to read that series!

In Search of Lost Time is likely to be my retirement book 😂 that's a commitment. I'm jealous of your fly time

It's been years since I've read it but my mind keeps going back to it, its really one of the best novels ever written

I have a couple at the moment, the third volume of Proust, and War and Peace. Im only putting them off because I'm got 50+ hours of flying coming up later in the year and I think it'll make for a good opportunity to get lost in those books

Can't imagine handling two 😂. But yeah, with the sleep and everything I often can't bring myself to read or do anything productive when he's gone to bed

This is normal. Parenting has huge responsibilities. I'm trying to read a book about Game Theory and I've had little time. I have a 15 and 10 year old. It's a lot of work. Throw in laundry, food prep, and your job and because we need sleep it becomes hard to read at great lengths.

The Grand Inquisitor was my first thought. From a literary standpoint, I am sure there are better but it amazingly combines religion, philosophy, literature and the human condition into one 17 page chapter...quite incredible.

I recommend trying a website called Novelist, if your library subscribes to it (you should be able to search for it on your library website or just ask someone who works there). It allows you to input the moods and feels you want from a book and it will make suggestions. You can also get suggestions for similar books to those titles or authors you liked and often these are suggested by librarians and will include a little description of why they are similar.
Seconding talking to library staff! They are excellent at providing book ideas and suggestions, and have gone through training to be able to do this.

Omg! I have that book! I love it! But I’ve never heard anyone else reference it. That’s awesome!

Wild Swans by Jung Chang
It's a biographical account of three generations of Chinese women, going through the shift from feudal China, civil war, and Mao's cultural revolution
In 'Holy Mountain' we get to see the same woman live through all of that.
As for Utopia Ave, maybe just wanted to write something fun? I think darkness will be back on the menu whenever his next one is out.

If you can find a copy, you should check out The Incarnations by Sue Barker. It has a similar feel to Mitchell, especially Ghostwritten and Cloud Atlas. It’s a bit darker, more gruesome though.

I won’t lie — there are definitely a few volumes on my bookshelves that are there more because they look interesting/attractive than because of their literary value. Helps to round out my collection of books, in a way.
