Rushdie, mostly.
An actual literary genius.

There are lots of other popular writers besides the ones you named. There's quite a large pool of popular writers, in fact.

If you love most of the other relatively recent books this subreddit likes, you'll probably like it.
I know I hated it, it's basically just a worse version of Shinsekai Yori as far as I'm concerned, but I hate most things this sub loves, especially the newer ones.

The first person bits threw me off, too, but I pushed through and actually found it decent enough to read the rest of the trilogy.
The first person perspective does ultimately end up being there for a reason, and is involved in a brilliant twist in the first book (and, if I'm remembering right, A sorta ok twist in the third).

I thought Dr. Sleep was a good book, but his attempts to make Abra feel like a ‘modern kid’ by having her name drop Game of Thrones characters definitely made me cringe.

I don’t know why we need weekly “I think Stephen King is overrated” posts.

I consider him to be a good storyteller and mediocre writer. Joe Hill (his son) is a much stronger writer, but not quite as good a storyteller.

When are we as a culture going to stop throwing around baseless allegations of pedophilia?

I don’t but this is because I tend to already know everything that will happen before I choose to read a book. Plot, spoilers, everything. Before tons of online reviews were so available I used to read a chapter (or some pages) from the beginning, middle, and end before purchasing; so I guess I sort of read the last page; just in a broader context.

I don't think your expectations are two high. The only thing I would say is don't excuse the selfpublished simply because it is selfpublished.
When I first went down the selfpublishing hole, I found a lot of writers who claimed to be absolutely against traditional publishing, and wrote screen upon screen trumpeting the death of traditional publishing. They still made sure their books were as close as possible to every other book in their genre. Some of these writers did later sign to traditional publishers.
The reverse is also true, with traditionally published authors 'going indie' because they saw more money in it.
In both cases the quality of the writing varied. I suspect that's a result of giving readers more of what they liked in previous books. I don't know if that's the case in the books you're talking about, but it's the sort of thing that happens when books are seen as content, and the writi g pf a book begins with the marketing.

Oh, that's a shame. Just thought I was missing out since I'd seen people saying the original books that inspired the game were great!

I agree. I read The Atom Station and it was very good, but I felt like I was missing a lot of historical context.

Reply to comment by KiwiTheKitty in How do you read paperbacks without getting cracks on the spine? by [deleted]
I found this less of an issue with the method outlined; since you’re essentially breaking the spine invisibly. But this is definitely more of an issue with mass markets, and I get why it would be frustrating.
And from the same perspective; I get why you don’t like them. I adore them; but that’s a side effect of how I read; they make reading easier for me but harder for you. No judgement here, either!

Used to read the first and last couple of words of a book to look for a hidden message when I was kid lol

I never claimed he's my favorite author. He's just really smart and his books are great. If you write books, it's not an argument. It's a fact. He knows what's up. He knows what he's creating. He knows what people want, and he's really good at consistently delivering dopamine.
And yeah, I couldn't. He didn't make any sense. The words were all spelled incorrectly. No grammar. There was no thought behind whatever they were saying. I'm still clueless how you can be that illiterate while trying to bash one of the most successful authors on this planet.
I'm not being sensitive lol. That's the way it is. It's fucking clownshoes.

Don’t really know what’s popular honestly. Just saw the book on the recommendations and the blurb seemed interesting. I was looking for some sci-fi stuff to read.
