I stole this from Amazon's synopsis as I was afraid of saying the wrong thing and to ruin any micro surprises that truly make the book a real treat to listen to.

"Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he’s got to do it all alone.

Or does he?

An irresistible interstellar adventure as only Andy Weir could deliver, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian—while taking us to places it never dreamed of going."

I love that you have such an interest in Fitzgerald. He’s my favourite author. However, most of your comparisons you listed weren’t accurate. Fitzgerald and his wife met at a country club and wrote each other many love letters while he was away in the army. It was Zelda’s parents that had reservations about Fitzgerald not being rich and trying to become an author which they assumed he’d never be successful at. He had two successful novels before writing The Great Gatsby, which was not considered a success for its time. They drank away a lot of their money and Fitzgerald wrote many short stories to keep money coming in. He had a few well known affairs on his wife who later was institutionalized for schizophrenia and died when the hospital had a fire.

If you read a lot I highly recommend the kindle Paperwhite! So worth it. I love the instant access, reading at night, and being able to carry it around in my bag. I also love not having a distraction of a phone. It’s only for books so I have much less temptation to scroll and waste my time.

Hi thank you to both for commenting on this post! So in response to both of your comments on how the author is connected to Gatsby, I am going to mainly state what I learned in my class. Jay Gatsby represents obsession and patience and what I learned about F Scott Fitzgerald is that he had a similar story with his wife Zelda. Fitzgerald was only able to get the attention from Zelda once he started becoming rich, and before that she had no interest in him. Just like Gatsby, Fitzgerald still waited. Those were the main parallels at the time when Fitzgerald was still alive, however crazy enough, after the book was written, we can even compare the tragedy of Gatsby to Fitzgeralds tragedy. Sadly enough, Gatsby did not take off upon first selling, and this was due to people thinking Fitzgerald was a bad author and not giving him a chance. It was only till years later the book was truly appreciated. After not having a success with his book, Zelda proceeded to leave Fitzgerald after all that time he waited for her. Fitzgerald then proceeded to die of a heart attack (presumably caused my alcohol, and Zelda died in a mental institution. Now, obviously Fitzgerald couldn’t predict him and Gatsby having both terrible tragedies happening to them. But it turned out that way, and to me that’s crazy. Thank you guys again for the comments!

Libraries in my area will not charge more in fines than the cost of the book (when they’re Gia lit about a month late). I forgot to return a few books and got a bill for them but was only charged the daily fine rate when I finally returned them.

Per rule 3.14 No DAE, TIL, or Unpopular Opinion type threads. The answer to any question beginning with the words 'does anybody else...' is literally always yes, and the answer to any question beginning with 'am I the only one...' is literally always no. You are far from the only reader to have come up with this idea/habit/thought and we are not here to provide you with praise or validation. These threads should be rephrased to provide significant content for discussion and less clickbait titles, or posted in their respective dedicated subreddits. I got hit with a bunch of fines moreso generated by DVDs because my library is steep on those... I returned them all, mumbled something about being out of town / forgetting, and they cut my fees in half on the spot.

Just get it over with and be honest, they might be nicer than you think. And they have seen worse.

I have transitioned to that as well because the only time I have to consume literature is at work or while driving. I am honestly grateful I can plug away 30hours into an audio book every week at work because it has brought my love for literature back into my life when I wasn’t consuming it for years.

I listen to mostly audiobooks after being a voracious reader for my entire life. I don’t have time to sit with a book for hours like I used to. Being able to get through a book while driving, doing housework, etc. has been a godsend 🥰

On the western edge of Wisconsin, but… Driftless Books and Music in Viroqua, Wisconsin is definitely one of the most interesting used bookstores I’ve ever visited. In an old tobacco warehouse building. Do NOT go on a very warm day - no a/c and not a lot of ventilation, either. But a great used bookstore, inside and out. If I remember correctly, they’re only open late spring through autumn.

I have a job that includes a lot of travel. It's paid travel time, not commute, but I use audiobooks to soak up that time because it allows me to enjoy many more books than I could otherwise. However, I can't stand listening to an audiobook if I'm not doing anything else so I still read physical or ebooks a lot.
