That is an insane price to pay. I've heard of property management companies using a pricing program that compares all other rent prices and basically maxes out the rent. They're using this nationwide now, or so I've heard. It makes sense because they are doing the same thing in healthcare.

I don't know what to tell you. Other than move to a less expensive area. Rent is bonkers now.

Sorry to hear that. We used to live in Roland Ridge Apartments near Medfield High and we thought the rates were reasonable (parking used to be free). Just putting it out there, especially since you have a car for commute.

I would love it if people visiting Hampden would park at the Rotunda and just walk to The Ave but they don't. If we had zoned parking restrictions people would probably do that.

Even more reason why we need zoned parking for residents. The Hampden Merchants Association is the problem.

here's a pretty helpful twitter thread about what the actual contents of the spill were and what to monitor water quality for, if you're really concerned.

also contains a fairly bleak reminder that hazmat freight accidents happen like… insanely often in the USA and just aren't reported on very much. a huge hazmat truck just crashed like two days ago and dumped dioxins all over a watershed area! this has just been happening for ages bc our infrastructure is a mess! shockingly, despite this accident, rail is still our best bet for transporting hazmats… when the track is actually maintained and the workers aren't being screwed over (this east palestine disaster is pretty much a direct result of the union rail workers being completely screwed after they just tried to organize all of those rail strikes—a situation like this was exactly the sort of accident they were organizing to avoid, because they know the conditions Norfolk Southern et. al. forces them to operate under are not adequate or safe).

Just outside the city is Arbutus. You've got bars, restaurants, a good coffee shop, movie theatre, and MD's oldest comic book store all on the little main street surrounded by single family homes. Cheaper than Catonsville and depending where you live, less than a mile walk from the MARC train to Baltimore, DC, and the BWI. It's not too crowded and the UMBC campus is nearby so there are occasionally major concerts or events you can walk to (if Limp Bizkit and AEW wrestling is "major", lol).

I managed to buy a house in the area, partly because I figured my new lease was going to be more than a mortgage after all the inflation. It was something I had been working towards for years though. It’s got a spare bedroom with a bathroom attached, makes me wonder if I should rent it out. I feel ethically dubious about being a landlord even if it’s like roommates.

Dude, Jesus Christ.

Cities and urban environments existed long before "public transit" and even the bicycle. We've got even better amenities now with electric scooters/bicycles. Yes, people have adapted to how cities have evolved, but they're not necessary.

Waiting to spend billions on public transit before increasing urbanization and density is a wild push.

That’s wild. I am super curious who knew what when because both Bevins and Johnny O were very publicly feuding with the IG Madigan (even going so far as to call her a bully and attempting to limit her subpoena power) when the IG started digging into McCollum. Maybe they were just protecting their friend?

Reply to Pączki? by anne_hollydaye

I ended up going to the PNA. Found out that's where my father's family would go like 3x a week when he was a kid. This whole search for pączki has sent me down a rabbithole of family associations and history, and it's rather delightful.

Anyway. Y'all. Those folks know what they're doing. Bought golabki for dinner as well. Darned tasty meal - they do a better job with the rolling technique than we do at home. Thanks for the recs!
