The two are not mutually exclusive and employment taxes are not property taxes; Hopkins, as an institution, does pay above-median income jobs and they do not shoulder their share of the infrastructure resources they consume. I'd say maybe a third of my neighbors work for Hopkins at the Medical Campus about 4 blocks away. And yes, some of them do make good money. Those are the same people who can detail exactly how Hopkins consumes massive amounts of city resources through extensive real estate holdings while not contributing their share of that that tax base. It's true of most non-profits with large real-estate holdings. Having employees is not some get-out-of-Tax-free card.

On my street we get the sweeper coming through twice a week (a different side of the street each time) and recycling every two weeks.

My understanding is that the recycling situation is a staffing issue and that the street sweepers will just skip your block if there are too many cars, because what's the point...

As for BPD, it seems our tax dollars go to clocking ridiculously high overtime for simply existing in uniform.

Let me be clear, people harassing her are trash and wrong.

But, no, this is not how you get segregation. Segregation comes from actual policies. No one has a policy at Coppin or at any HBCU that representatives of an HBCU must be black.

Her harassers are ignorant and sorely mistaken.

I went to an HBCU. Um, no one at an HBCU would actually gaf about this. The only people who would probably haven't been to an HBCU. Mine was very diverse. The students pick their reps?? Just another case of people not knowing what they are talking about.

Even within HBCUs there are whole identifying-as-black folks that look like her, past and present... Nobody who has actually attended an HBCU is blinking an eye at this.

Girl, enjoy being queen and representing your school!

Ah man, what a drag. This was posted on Google. Damn, this really hurts my heart. We loved them.

We hope to be able to pop-up now and again, but for now we have to join the land of the 9 to 5. Just remember that when we were good we were great, and when we were bad we were amazing."

They had a brick and mortar location in The Hanover bar. 3440 S Hanover St, Baltimore, MD 21225

But I'm not sure what's going on with that. It might be that because it's winter he's not doing it. I usually call the number on their FB and ask if they're open on where they are. (this is where it gets complicated and Drew has expressed his exasperation in keeping the business going)

My wife, a white teacher in baltimore, has never experienced the extreme version of this but her achool specifically has made a point over the years of bringing families and community members into the school to have round table discussions with teachers about what their kids experience and it has gotten very uncomfortable at times. There are always a handful of parents who will treat the white teachers differently than the black ones. To be fair the teachers are like 70% white in a school that is 99% black. So it's certainly a barrier to understanding to get over that I think her school handles pretty well. But still some parents are much less interested in participating in discussions and sharing of ideas and cultures than others are.

Great example of how we need to break the spirit of the folks who drive in Baltimore. The sense of entitlement must be palpable in the kind of person who won't even slow down at an intersection with a non-functional traffic light.

Also great example, of how poorly maintained our infrastructure is. I get the feeling that other cities aren't plagued by constantly failing traffic lights.

Part of it is that there's a focus on sexy progressive initiatives rather than making basic services more efficient.

I'm a liberal, but believe redressing wealth inequality, etc. is the responsibility of the state and especially federal governments. Local governments can't do much about it. Their job is to address basic services and make an environment that's conducive to investors, including you and me.

> Do they want segregation? Because this is how you get segregation.

If you want the serious answer, then I will tell you that the answer is yes: there is a small, but loud segment of Black persons (more specifically, some Black men) who hate integration and indeed do believe that schools should be segregated (including staff and faculty); and they have the idea that doing so would benefit Black persons as a whole.

Perhaps not coincidentally, if placed on a venn-diagram, the overlap between said persons, conspiracy theorists, and hoteps (the latter two not necessarily being mutually exclusive) is functionally a flat circle.
