They did? Damn, I remember those showers being crowded communal spaces. Good times...

Honestly, all the gym teachers were hella-weird like that...
Also I'm pretty sure I recall hearing about one gym teacher who unfortunately committed suicide. Wouldn't surprise me if SJ's culture drove him to that...

I remember that guy. He once freaked out and gave me detention cuz my hair wasn't short enough for the dress code. It was literally almost a damn buzz cut.
Dude was a power tripping psychopath.

Definetly Canal District (for the yippies), Kelly Sq and downtown is very nice, the Common (behind city hall) just put up the Christmas tree and there’s lights to see. Park avenue has tons of restaurants, and Shrewsbury St is very popular and know as “restaurant row” . Highland St has nice shops, the Boynton is great, and Sole Proprietor. Not exactly Worcester, but Blackstone Plaza in Millbury is a huge plaza with tons of stores and restaurants. Tons of places to go as well, Art Museum, the Antiquarian, Ecotarium. Worcester History Museum. Hanover Theater and Mechanics Hall in Downtown hosts musicals and plays. The Palladium hosts concerts from small local bands or more known musicians and have outdoor concerts in the Summer.

If you like to chill with books, the Worcester Public Library can’t be beat. You probably won’t bother on a day trip but if you move here you should check it out.

I think the unions should be pressuring all union shops to increase staffing instead of wage increases. There is nothing worse than working in a profession you love but grow to hate because you are forced to do the work of two or three people and ridiculous shifts that will eventually effect your well being. Most direct care positions start out as dream jobs because what you do makes a difference in people's lives. Eventually the corporate people look for ways to increase profit and staffing is the first thing that takes a hit. A little at a time your job becomes more difficult, you work harder but aren't compensated for it. Profits rise and corporate starts cutting more staff and mandating longer shifts. People quit and the job becomes a nightmare. Complaints never go further up than middle management and the union local. Things keep getting worse, so you quit and it's the end of a career because every similar place of employment is exactly like the one you just left. Things are going to get much, much worse if this doesn't change.

The insidious thing about NIMBYism is how prevalent it is even among people who claim to want to help these people. As Phil Ochs once said about liberals, "Three degrees to the left of center in the good times, three degrees to the right of center if it affects them personally."

When I think of NIMBYs I think of rich folk. I feel like the Worcester blue line when I think of folks who want to refuse these sorta things for unhoused folks.
But that’s just me

I love the Canal District. Make sure to stop at the Queen’s Cups for the best cupcakes and treats. Birch Alley is a nice store too. The Woo Sox baseball stadium is fun in the summer.
Near UMass: if you’re a runner, you’ll like Sneakerama. They have a Thursday night fun run year round that anyone is welcome to join. El Basha is next door and has great middle eastern cuisine. Across the bridge on Rt 9 are all the chain stores and fast food places as well as some more good restaurants.
There are lots of great parks and outdoor spaces in and around the city. The Tower Hill Botanic Garden is lovely. There’s ice skating at City Hall. Rowing on Lake Quinsigamond. Tennis courts, fields and trails along the water.

Not sure if I dare open myself to this but here we go …. I am part of this emergency shelter staff. I am also a person in long term recovery that started my journey out of homelessness through the Queen Street shelter over five years ago. My first year was spent sober at the shelter, horrified. I completely understand the neighborhoods frustration with the lack of “notice”. There was an attempt made by MANY people I know and respect to try and get this off the ground as early as July. I will not speak about Hotel Grace except to say the issues they are facing are not new, many in city government knew about what was happening and yet still dragged their feet to recognize and solve the problem. That is, until around October. The shelter currently opening is full of very qualified staff, who have been involved with serving the homeless community for decades. This is our chance to show how this can be done and done correctly. Both leaving as little a footprint on the neighborhood while providing services very much needed to help the long term problem of homelessness. Queen Street and Hotel Grace have both painted shelters in a poor light, the latter still being better on many topics and that is the stigma we are trying to dismiss. All of that being said - the statements I am hearing from humans at these open meetings is absolutely disgusting and inappropriate. The anger and frustration could be used positively at the polls - to send a message that we want the city to have a dedicated location that all agree with that offers REAL services. NOT at those in need. I am certain that there will be struggles given the circumstances we’ve been dealt, but they will not be anything more than that of any other service or business getting off the ground. For every 1 nasty neighbor spewing venom there is 5 wonderful citizens asking how to help and offering support. And for the location - the city would have to declare a emergency of crisis with homelessness in order for us to use privately owned locations. Something the city is not interested in doing ( not a lawyer, so I don’t have an opinion on this ). They are left with locations owned and operated by 501c3 charities - aka a church. This parish opened up and made a miracle happen and we are eternally grateful to the parish of the Blessed Sacrament. Father and parish committee said yes after 12 other locations said No. My last point is this … the homeless are out there already. They exist in the dark - despite what you may see on your way to work. Evidence proves that the best chance to intercept and redirect chronic homelessness is by instituting a shelter in this format. I hope this is the first of many steps this amazing city that I owe my life to, will make towards properly managing a growing problem.
Edit: thank you kind strangers for my first awards! Fitting it came from a post so close to my heart.

I highly recommend checking out the Worcester public market in Kelley Square and getting some grub @ Pasta Mani or one of the other great eateries. After that you can pop over and check out seed to stem and some other cool shops. Birch tree which someone else mentioned is also great. Shrewsbury street is also a pretty cool part of town. Volturno for pizza and beer. Kinichi for sushi.

I live a few blocks from the UMass Med campus and definitely recommend checking out food around. For example, Cafe Reyes - a Cuban joint that is staffed by rehab patients - is not far away and had one of the best breakfasts/lunches in the city. My partner and I also are fond of Regatta Deli and Lakeside Bar and grill for casual fare, too. The lakeside parks are also great -- in the summer, the Regatta Park has watercraft courses, and there's outdoor BBQ as well.
