That’s awesome! Congrats! It might be useful to know that relative to other parts of the country, I guess we don’t have a super friendly culture. We’re pretty self contained, in general. If it’s hard to make friends, it’s probably not personal. It’s called the “cascade freeze.”

Port Orchard is pretty white. If you’d feel more comfortable with more diverse neighbors, Tacoma or many other parts of the Puget Sound region are the place to start. I’ll let others weigh in on the commute to Port Orchard.

However! WSDOT is super telework friendly, if you’re getting an office job. Plus there are lots of openings around the state as the boomers retire, so once you have your foot in the door you might be able to transfer to another position that’s in another part of Washington, if Port Orchard doesn’t turn out to be your jam.

Welcome! And good luck at WSDOT! I have several friends who work there, and they really like it.

I am from Port Orchard, I am now 30 and live in Tacoma. Pros of Port Orchard are it’s a bit more affordable compared to the Seattle metro, but that is quickly changing with the fast ferry access to Seattle and more people leaving the Seattle area for surrounding towns and cities. I think the vibe of the area is somewhat rural, and it is more conservative than many parts of Western Washington. Not very culturally diverse imo. But if you have kids I don’t think there’s much for them to do there and that’s my biggest issue with it. The one movie theatre closed recently, most things to do are either in gig harbor or Bremerton/Silverdale.

Yeah, I think I'm going to just get a tree crew for chipping and hauling, but do the bulk of the clearing myself. One of those 50 cu yd dumpsters is $1k to have dropped off and picked up! I filled 3 of them last year... not cheap at all.

Great advice ! What's the foolproof way to know in advance that chains wouldn't be required before we start the journey , in your opinion ?

I see from the current updates that the conditions are bare and wet and no restrictions for east bound travel . I believe this means that the conditions have zero difficulties if i start now, except for a bit of mud because of the wetness . Am I right ?

Cool.

Where’d you get $150k to put towards that house? Save for it, family help, down payment assistance?

I’m supporting 5 other people on my single income. So yeah, money doesn’t go far, especially nowadays. 4 of them are 5 and under, 3 are still in diapers, so there’s a lot of expenses that aren’t just bills.

No two situations are alike.

I will tell you, since you’re curious about criminal activity, that from my view in the drivers seat of my Freightliner, 7 out of 10 vehicles i can look down into are the ones you need to focus on. I see people on the phone, drinking, hitting a toke, etc.

As a professional driver, I take much pride in the job I do. I have over 2 million accident-free miles so far, but ya’ll up here in the PNW aren’t making it easy for me to reach my 3 million mile mark.

Thank you for viewing my photo. Have a pleasant weekend

Be flexible and check the WSDOT page. Most of the time, the road is in great shape and you should have absolutely no trouble. My suggestion is don't go if chains are required (even though you don't need chains for your AWD) - because that means conditions will be worse and other drivers will be having problems.
