Reply to Do you prefer Washington to Massachusetts? by Clollin
Ooh this is a thread I’m oddly qualified to comment.
I grew up in the greater Boston area and lived in Cambridge as an adult.
I moved to Washington almost two years ago.
I prefer Washington. I like the weather, the nature, the sound, I like my proximity to Seattle and Portland, I find the people are friendlier. I also prefer the time zone for sports.
I have a sentimental attachment to Boston, but I don’t think I’d live there again. Too expensive and difficult to get around. (Although my cousin and I call 5 our 128). Don’t miss the T breaking down all the time. Too much snow.

What kind of contractor did the work? That sounds much more aligned to what I would expect this to cost.

Honest question, what have you been pulled over for 12 times previously?

I had about an acre done, it cost $13k to be cleared and graded. First quote I got was the same price just to cut down the trees and leave the stumps, so I felt like I got a good deal since it was nice and smooth in the end. I suspect you just need to get a few more quotes.

It's a very nice area but building Horizon Pointe caused so much traffic in the area it's a pain in the ass to get anywhere during the day.

You are darn lucky they didn’t repo that car. You just flat out should not have been driving at all. Pay the fines. Take the bus until you are legally able to drive.

Cotton wood is used for paper and has value enough to offset the cost of taking them down.

That’s an insane price for that amount of work. Shouldn’t be more than 30k plus permits.

It’s not that hard of a skill to pick up if you learn on the smaller stuff first…just make sure you have good chain saws and sharp chains…rent a brush cutter first and clear underbrush so you can see what your doing. You got this, and you’ll have new skills when you are done.

I also felt much less at home in WA once I moved apartments. The new apartment was "better" but didn't feel like home.

I definitely don't agree about the restaurants being better "out east". That's actually one of the things I miss about WA, all of the food I ate (and I even gained less weight in WA).
Admittedly, in WA I was in Seattle more often than I go to Boston, and I was eating out more in general so discovered more places.
But I just don't know as many delicious places in MA as I did in WA.
If it's not clear from this post, I do still tend to prefer Massachusetts overall tho. It's definitely home.

This is the answer! It goes pretty fast with the right equipment. Pay a few friends in beer and pizza and you can do an acre a weekend. Clear underbrush first then fell excessive/damaged trees site clean up isn’t bad if you find a place to take organic material for compost, or chip it yourself for landscaping. I did a similar project and it’s pretty rewarding when it’s done and then you sell excess equipment and your cost is the difference + time.

One thing that nobody has mentioned so far is that a major part of the cost is hauling the debris away. You could have them cut down the trees and run them through a wood chipper and leave it in piles. Cottonwood chips smell amazing!

Oh and the grade is a huge factor as well, steep or flat.

It depends on so many factors… location, wetlands, permitting, forest designation or not, if the wood is valuable, etc.

So get get from work with something other than a car?
Cars take up a huge amount of space. I realize you want to drive everywhere, but it's just not a feasible option for everyone to do that. Look at LA for an example of what happens when you try to build a metro area like that. If anything we should be investing more in non-car options in order to improve the driving experience.
