Early 70's, 3rd week in October and beautiful weather. My buddy and I hiked in for a couple of days, built a small log structure and had a blast.

If the circumstances aren't money related, invest in a pair of chains. I have a tiny front wheel drive car and they make a massive difference.

Plus, depending on where you're going, it's not just snoqualmie pass you have to worry about but all the passes and states between here and your destination.

And that, there, is one of the key differences: you’re only funding yourself. Adding a dependent of any sort, other than a pet, drastically changes things.

As does the area in which you live. “Tacoma-ish” is a bit cheaper, on average, from what I understand than most anything Seattle and north.

If you’re making it now and able to save, sweet. Stuff away what you can while you can. This may not always be the case.
