I typically recommend any Squier “Fat” Stratocaster for new guitarists, as:

(1) they’re usually relatively cheap;

(2) are of decent standard quality; and

(3) are rather versatile, especially the “Fat” (or “HSS” configuration). “HSS” stands for “Humbucker, Single, Single” for the humbucker in the bridge position, 2 standard single-coils in the middle and neck positions. Single-coils are typically traditional in all Stratocaster pickup positions, but the Fat/HSS gives you a little more tonal options as you can feel out what you like.

These guitars are pretty readily available and I strongly recommend used/Craigslist ones you can find near the $100-200 mark. Make sure it feels right (i.e. comfortable) to you when trying it out. Also, if you find yourself enjoying it—a good setup (fresh strings, string height, neck straightness) by a professional is invaluable (likely around $100).

I’m not trying to change your opinion, but Diver Down is one of my favorite Van Halen albums! It’s such a fucking massive hubris project and if you approach it as a pile of ego and cocaine, then, I don’t know, it makes sense and if that then wins you over, it’s such a hilarious rollercoaster ride of a record. I mean, for me, I have to approach all of the Van Halen records (the first six, whatever happens after 1984 never happened in my book) with a certain amount of role playing to really allow them to enter my mind or vice versa, and that being said, the more what the hell are they even thinking right now, the better.

You need to try them out and see which one you're comfortable playing with. How do your hands/wrists feel? Is holding it comfortable? Etc.

If you're starting out, pick a cheaper model. If you keep at it, you can sell it later and buy a nicer one

I always thought he was just as skilled at writing gritty English blues songs as he was the more well-known "softer" stuff like "Whiter Shade".

Here, enjoy a very fine ditty that should have been as "popular" as anything by Cream, Bluesbreakers, Animals, etc. (and should have made Robin Trower at least as famous as Clapton, lol.)
