How much of Aha's song Take On Me can they sing...that's a good range indicator. I'm kidding, but it's also a massive range.

Think of the common choir groups: Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass (there's more, technically) Based off the natural/comfortable ability of the singer, one of these ranges sorta just makes sense. Most of the time, the range someone talks at will be a good indicator of where they would sit in a choir.

But to determine the limits of a range, you're testing notes until you waiver or strain too much. A tuner would help, but it's up to you how much you want to track it or push it. Most people don't talk at their limits, so to tell a full range from talking only gets harder. How they breathe while talking might be an indicator, or if they're monotone or not.

I had never heard of nick cave prior to Reddit. Thanks to Reddit, I went and listened to the majority of his catalogue, as I’m always trying to find new music that might appeal to me. So I must admit, I absolutely hate Nick Caves music. He’s not alone, there are plenty of artists I loathe. And he’s right there with all of them.

I don't think adding Houses of the Holy to it's namesake album would've tipped the scales away from PG. I don't have a favorite album but I think being a double LP full of absolute bangers I'd give the edge to PG just off sheer volume.

edit - basically, they're all my favorite, but PG is two albums worth of songs so it counts twice.

>And like a quarter of my generation (born in 2001 so I'm a certified zoomer) agrees with you.

I really had no idea. Wow. I kind of notice this when I see the comment on YouTube songs where younger people say they really enjoy it. I just would not have guessed 1/4.

I'd be curious if you could recommend anything new!

24, Canadian, Nick Cave has been one of my musical heroes since high school and I can't believe I'm getting the chance to see him in Toronto this fall

It's a cheap and lazy argument to tell someone who doesn't like rap they are racist. My favorite genre of music right now that I have been getting into heavily lately has been Jazz, and guess what the race of the majority of Jazz artists is? I've already said that many of my favorite artists are old Motown artists.

I'm also tired of people trying to tell me that I just haven't listened to the right kinds of rap and I should give it a chance. I have heard enough of opera and country music to respect that it takes talent but that it's not for me and I likely will never enjoy it no matter how much I try to. I grew up loving hard metal and I never tried to push that on anyone else or tried to tell them they weren't listening to enough variety of it

If it really causes you THAT much mental distress to have your ears subjected to music you don't like, then I apologize. My only advice is to ignore it. Like it or not, music is going to continue to evolve outside of your comfort zone. We're a long ways away from the 70s and 80s.

Nick Cave has a wide demographic. I went and saw him about five yrs ago and there were three teens in leather jackets in front me and my friends. And behind us where two couples that looked like they were in their late 60’s-early 70’s. And most of the lines were equally diverse.

I am a big fan. 41 product manager for a major tech company. And unpaid screenwriter. Love to listen to him both while I write and do my day job.
