Have you seen the bridge?

You do realise that rap and hip hop began in the seventies…?
And that rhythmic spoken work precursors to rap abounded in jazz and blues since before music was recorded at all…
Liberate yourself from some of those gnarly old tropes you’ve imbibed sometime and try listening to, say Miles Davis, whose final album before his untimely passing was a hip hop album. De La Soul - whose stuff is now finally streaming - had nothing to do with the Gangsta Rap you seem to think encompasses all hip hop.
By all means stay in your time capsule but try not to spread those old, frankly racist, tropes to another generation…
Oh, btw, I’m pushing sixty, and I love Billie Eilish and Mo, Ju’s (formerly Mojo Juju) new album is a killer …

You're not saying anything new. And like a quarter of my generation (born in 2001 so I'm a certified zoomer) agrees with you. But we also know how to turn the radio off and listen to artists that aren't on the charts. Some of the best music ever made is coming out right now, it's just not selling out arenas anymore like it used to in the 70s. Listen to some more niche stuff and I'm sure you'll find new music that you like. Or stick with your old records if that's what you like

Ah yes, classic r/Music post.
If only you used the same sort of energy to listen to/discover music that you actually enjoy, as you do to trash different music preferences.

I'm a fan. Demographically, 40s singer, bass player, and a multi-instrumentalist if you look at prior album notes. Lived in or around Washington, D.C. most of my life at this point. I've played music from classical, to jazz, to metal, horror folk, electronica, indie rock. My drummer is also a big fan. Guitar player is a more casual fan of Cave. Also similar ages. Mostly long lived near D.C. Also have played a wide array of music.

I don't know if I would say they're angry necessarily, but I like Crossfade. Their first album in particular which is self titled. "Cold" was probably the biggest hit off this album for them, but I also really like "Starless", and my favorite is probably "Death Trend Setta".

In highschool guitar class freshman and sophomore years we got the first standing ovations in over 15 year… why? Freshman year- we played stairway. Sophomore year- we played over the hills.
I don’t care how overplayed those two rings are, there’s a reason why…… pure art.

Which makes listening to Led Zeppelin today, like digging Benny Goodman, in 1985...nobody could shred on clarinet, like Benny Goodman.
Big Band music is due for a comeback...

Buy an iPod, it’s a game changer. You can store and listen to any song you want to anytime you want. And the cool thing is, it’s only songs you like.

Mid 50s here, I love all kinds of music from 50s through today. Loved the 90s the most. I always mixed him up with Nick Lowe. I have to be honest I always wanted to check him and the seeds out but never did. I’m sure I heard some maybe lots of his music since I listen to public radio mostly. I heard him when he collaborated with PJ Harvey. I also remember the chick from Bongwater referencing him in one of their songs. Tell me where to start I will give it a listen.

All comes down to subjectivity. You're from a generation that has a lot of great music. There is still a lot of great music today. For rap, check out NF. If you like uk hip hop, check out Verb T as well as The Four Owls.

I got to see her in a concert with Steve Earle and Robert Plant. I forget who the musician was that cancelled, so that got Robert Plant to fill in and he mostly did Townes Van Zant songs. It was such an amazing night.

I also grew up in the 70s and 80s. I go out of my way to listen to and support less mainstream artists who are writing excellent new music. The best part is that the lesser known ones play at smaller venues and it’s fun to get to meet them.

Early 30s woman from Florida. I got into nick cave in the early 2000s. I don't remember exactly how I got into him but I was always into alternative/ post punk/ punk music. I had a bunch of bad seeds tapes in my old 1980s volvo because I didn't have a cd player. Maybe I knew of him because of dumb and dumber, I don't know. Still into postpunk and punk music now but I'm mostly a normie with tattoos.
*ok I remember now! It was MTV. Insomniac Theatre.

I was in high school. I'll never forget the first time I heard the opening riff on Dancing Days.

My 63yo Dad is a huge Nick Cave fan. I (30m) also think he's awesome but don't listen all that much.
Once spent a night doing coke with one of his kids though so take that Dad.
