Sonic youth would be great as just when they split they were releasing decent music.

So you’re a fan of heavier stuff. I prefer the earlier parts as it slowly builds with the Fender Rhodes coming in. Each to their own.
At the time it was a bit novel having a song that long but the Beatles kicked that door open with Hey Jude.

I don't get it. Lyrics are atrocious and the so called 'greatest guitar solo ever' is the most unimaginative stuff on the guitar I've heard. All I hear is 'ploink ploink ploink'. I struggle to even stay focused enough to listen until the end.

Honestly it’s a great song but the guitar solo is really the only part I particularly enjoy

I read that Plant wrote the lyrics in less than a hour. Just threw in a few vague tolkien quotes and the rest was meaningless. He hated it (apparently) I think its cool . Nowhere near their best stuff though

It's one of the greatest rock songs in history. One of the first epic songs to give us a slow burn into one of the biggest song finales of all time. You wouldn't have Bohemian Rhapsody without it (another great).
That being said, after hearing it for decades, I don't need to ever hear it again.

This is the best answer. Also… highly overlooked aspect of the song: 1) the perspective of the lyrics travels through third person to direct address as the song gets more involved. and 2) Robert Plant mentioned that Page and him wrote most of it in one sitting.
