Shelters can be really bad about making clear a dog's temperament. Years ago I adopted a GSD that they swore was good with other animals.

In under a week it Turned out it absolutely was not good with other animals and went after someone's small dog. Had to return him the next day since it just wasn't gonna work in our home with a small animal.

I know shelters try their best but this creates dangerous situations.

Hiring a guide is the best route - they will have all the basic gear you will need, plus they may have items that are nice to have like a shack, heater, and a way to cook food. They will also know places to fish, how to access and help you understand the different ways to set up for different species.

Ice fishing is great, but aside from being a bit expensive to start, there is a bit of information needed to just get started safely.

As mentioned the Facebook groups are good sources of information and so are local tackle shops.

Best of luck!

Brighton Ave Lowes usually has some big markdowns and the managers there have some flexibility on additional markdowns if you're compelling enough.

Avoid the Portland ReStore over by Handyman rental, they sell 10 or 12 yo used appliances there for 25% less than the big box store next to them. used wall sconces for $5 less than new with no warranty is no bargain either...

Do you think I found a house in Seattle for under 250,000 no PMI? My mortgage was $1500 a month and we made about 78k as a household. It's absolutely doable. I did this in the past ten years in a more expensive city. I am very aware of how it goes.

You set all these expectations off the bag to try and make it impossible. You can have PMI on your home, it doesn't add much. Trying to buy right this second at the height of interest rates is frankly a bad idea. But these rates are a relatively new problem and probably not a permanent problem. Now is the time to be saving up money for a down payment not looking for a home.

You are right, you aren't getting a $400 a month mortgage anymore. But to set that as a necessary expectation is insane and completely unnecessary. I've owned two homes and some property and never had my monthly payment been that low.

Here are some real numbers I have. Let's start at a net of $5,423. This is after health insurance and contributing to retirement. Let's go higher than you listed and say your mortgage is $2,000 a month and let's split the subsidized daycare difference at around $1,000 a month for daycare. You are now sitting at $2,423 leftover. When I had student loans in my household we paid $300 a month. $400 a month food budget for the family. (Again these are all real numbers.) Now you have $1,723 leftover for utilities, random bills and fun.

$1,723 is a completely reasonable leftover money. As long as you aren't living beyond your means you are fine. Put some into savings for a rainy day, If you have a car payment (that you didn't go overboard on) you can easily afford it. Your once a year insurances will eat most of one months extra but you should be prepared for that. Your expenses could even be higher and you would still be doing fine. These numbers also get better if you have family thst can help with daycare, or if you can change schedules around to have a parent available to watch the kid. But at worst you just wait a few years and it's over. It's not a permanent situation.

That is what you would have on a household Income of around $85k. About half what you say is a completely necessary to have kids. The trick is you have to live within your means. It would be great to have more money, but it isn't impossible to be comfortable with children while making far less. I don't get why people feel the need to throw out such unreasonable numbers for things.

Also the way electricity is metered, you may have one phase that sees most of your usage and the other is running very light. Cmp is reading the higher phase and billing you according to that, assuming both are the same. (Electrical metering is a joke and a scam in my opinion)

You have 2 phases of electricity fed into your home.

It may be as simple as some simple breaker/circuit labeling and some monitoring of usage of circuits and rearranging on the circuits in your panel.

Twin sisters?

The rotting boats? I have been going up for 50 years, that’s how I knew we were close to lake Damariscotta. I met a transplant, we were talking about the boats from kids, his mom told him they were Viking ships

You should look into hiring a guide for a day. They will have all tje gear you need, show you the basics, feed you lunch, and probably put you on some fish. Great way to get into the sport without having to invest in gear and not be totally in the dark. If you like it, you can go from there as far as investing in some equipment. Also there are several Maine specific ice fishing groups on Facebook, some people are more helpful than others, and I'm sure you could find someone or a group who will let you tag along for a day

Okay so I’m all for discussing possible solutions to dog attacks, but I think we should try to keep it respectful. Listen, I like pitbulls. I respect your right to not like pitbulls. I even respect your right to hate pitbulls and want them dead.

We need to remember however, that this is the comment section about a child who was mauled and this comment section has devolved into insulting people.

I’m not trying to lecture people, you’re allowed to have your opinion, I just think it might be a good idea to stick to this specific article instead of making broad statements.

‘All Pitbulls should die.’ Is not a realistic solution to the issue, and while you can have that view, stating it here will only lead to more arguments and this just doesn’t seem respectful to this girl.

There are subreddits on here that are both for and against pitbulls ownership and I think that those points might be better brought up there.

TLDR: I don’t think anyone is in the wrong here, but I think this comment section has become a war zone and a separate post about pitbulls might be a more appropriate place to have this debate, instead of on this particular post about a mauled child.

I got my drier from Lowe's S&D section, $300 for a drier with a $900 MSRP that usually gets to $600 during sales. The only damage was a small dent in the front corner, which I put up against a wall anyway. FYI, bring a pickup because they don't deliver S&D and won't sell it unless you can take it immediately. MFG warranty is still valid, but starts from original sales date.

What's the average rent for 2 and 3 bedroom apartments in Cumberland county? Can you even find a house for under $250,000 in the area? With today's mortgage rates, a $200,000 mortgage, assuming no PMI, will cost as much as a $325,000 ($400,000+ house) mortgage cost in 2020. I really don't think you grasp how much things have changed in the last 10 years. We bought our first house in Portland for under $125,000 when interest rates were just over 3%. Our mortgage was $400. It was a 3/1 that was well over 100 years old. That same house today would cost $350,000 which would be an $1800+ mortgage without PMI. The rent would likely be $2500/mo. It's pretty much the same story all over Cumberland county. How is a family just starting out, that has no equity and has student loans, supposed to make that work - especially if they don't have family nearby that can help with childcare?

What “type of people “ is it that shouldn’t be allowed a dog? And how does that translate to litany of other societal problems that are far more likely to end in fatality, considering you’re more likely to be killed by lightning than a dog. Edit: the figures of 284 put bull fatalities and 111 German shepherd fatalities were years 2016 through 2022, averaging about 31 total dog fatalities annually. 38 people die from lightning strikes each year, on average. Your solution is reactionary.

Seriously makes no sense. Why not "You can't drive on the road if there's a bunch of snow on your car?" Is there some nuance I'm missing?

48 hours from when a snow event ends? What qualifies as a snow event? What qualifies as the end of a snow event? And is weather not different in different places? And, as you say, even if this did unambiguously designate a cutoff time, are you allowed to just go nuts before then?
