I was in Hannaford and watched from 5 feet away as a dude punched another dude in the face twice for blocking the frozen food aisle with his cart.

I've never seen a dog punch anyone in Hannaford.

Fair advice on the Google radius!

I would love any suggestions on good parks/hikes. My ideal location would be one where I could easily do a trail run or at least a long walk during my lunch break (so something within 15-20 minutes), and then drive no more than an hour and a half on the weekend to a broader variety of trails or parks.

I've also found that karaoke, trivia, live music, etc does not necessarily mean a big town. I currently live in a 2k population town about 40m outside Denver, and they have their own rotation of karaoke nights & live music that are moistly sufficient for me (I supplement by driving into Denver on occasion). But it's hard to know which little towns have these things without actually having lived near/in them. I'm hoping there are towns other than Portland that offer what I'm describing & that the kind folks of reddit can help me identify them!

So, that's basically Portland. It's the only "urban" area for that sort of thing. But in national terms, it's basically a big town.

Draw a circle around Portland and then narrow down some areas based on parks and "outdoor attractions" that seem good to you. Then start Googling.

You’ll never solve this problem. Denying pets is the new racism.

I would love to see all stores enforce some sort of health laws against all pets except for blind people. And I’m a dog owner!

Any big box store or supermarket that tries it will get demagogued to death in the media.

Hi all! I'm a 31yo F planning to stay in Maine for October & November. My main goal is to enjoy the fall foliage & the outdoors, and hopefully not break the bank (max budget ideally $2100/month). I would like to live within an hour of hikes or parks or other outdoor attractions. I would also like to be within an hour of a more urban area so I can check out, say, karaoke or live music in the evening. What Maine neighborhoods would you recommend? Greatly appreciate any insights you might have!

Here’s an argument for building low income housing in town centers across Maine: you can build without providing 1 parking space per unit because many low income people don’t have cars. Vacationers from away won’t want to rent such places. It’ll create a much needed demand for public transportation.

Which why there are so many dogs in shelters already, due to people giving them up from not being able to take care of them properly. Sure a majority of dogs in shelters aren’t “pure bred” or whatever, but that doesn’t automatically make them untrainable or a “dangerous dog” because they were given up. But yes, people need to do their research. But mostly should be doing their research on shelters and adopting, instead of shopping.

False. Some people understand that communities require low-income workers to function and don't hate the idea of those people living around them.

YOU do. These people do. I don't.

The corporations aren't responsible for these residents wanting to put up class walls.

No.

EDIT: People ARE responsible for their choices and beliefs within our systems. Its how we make progress: by better people believing in better things and making better choices. SOME people believe better things.

Low income people will find absolutely NOTHING they can afford in that area of Freeport that they can walk to. No grocery store. Sam's sandwich shop and that s it. Nothing!! There is no Goodwill. No Walmart. Freeport wouldn't let a McDonalds move in to town for the longest time and then they reached a compromise, they could go to the other end, after Beans BUT they had to use an already existing building and it couldn't look like McDonalds. Have you been to Freeport? Do you know the area? | have lived here my whole life (62f) and have been to Beans many times and the traffic can be horrendous. There are no buses. I don't mind low income housing. I don't even care if it's in my backyard. I'm not a NIMBY…however...you don't install something where those who can't afford to live in that area...a place to live. You don't give poor people a house unless they can do the upkeep. Trust me...I was there. We had a house and we didn't have the extra cash to keep it up so it went to shit.

PS…it’s not really a ‘downtown’ like Portland or Gorham.

No. What's stopping progress is large corporations and the 1%, not a few middle to high middle income residents. It's not each other we should be fighting.

No one wants to live in a town with a lot of low income housing, but the problem is really that jobs aren't paying enough to the worker and they are being forced into low income housing as their only option. The solution is to fight back against the corporate world so people can make a loving wage.

This is probably my biggest pet peeve. No pun intended. Fake service animals and pets do not belong in grocery stores or department stores. I’ve been nipped at, barked at, seen dogs piss and shit on the floor, etc. Why do people think it’s OK for their dog to sit in a cart? Someone’s food is going to be in that cart later on. Some people are highly allergic to dogs, some are terrified of dogs, and surprise surprise some people just don’t like dogs. As far as I’m concerned, people who do this are just so entitled. And this isn’t something that has gone on forever. This is a relatively new thing, meaning the last 10 years or so. Edit to say that fake service dogs and pets absolutely don’t belong in restaurants.

I never actually said show quality. I said show lines because there is a big difference between a field bred Labrador (hunting lines) and a bench bred Labrador. They look and act differently
