Well, my wife and I stopped Christmas 3 years ago. We dont buy anything for us or family, only our son. Last year we sponsored a family in need, and this year we donated to the CHEO childrens hospital, but I totally get your point.
He did not get his "santas gifts" yet so theirs that. But yeah

Wash your humidifier like twice a week! Hope you get better soon!

And you know he’s gonna be pissed tomorrow when he doesn’t have any presents to open on Christmas. It’s frustrating now, but see it as an opportunity to have a funny memory in several years. You can rag on him when he’s 16 saying what a dumbass he was.

We do a more casual Christmas without one big sit down meal. Once the food is ready, people can just help themselves as they like.
Some years it’s just a bunch of appetizers. Over the years we’ve done stuff like mini pigs in a blanket, cheeses and meats, crackers, chips and dips, mozzarella sticks, mini quiches, chicken wings, stuffed jalapeños, mini meatballs in sauce, olives, etc. Some fruit and a veggie tray to lighten things up. If there is hot food, someone asks, “Hey, who wants some mozzarella sticks” and cooks up enough for everyone.
Some years it’s sub sandwiches. Good bread, lots of meats and cheeses and other toppings to choose from.
We might have one dessert such as cookies or pie or something, if the baker in the family feels like baking. But everyone always gets candy and chocolate in their stockings, so we don’t really need much more.

I like roast turkey (and there is no simpler thing than roast bird: salt and herb the outside and inside, pop in oven. Wait. Eat).
Hubby’s parents and our kids are coming for dinner tonight, and that’s what we’re doing—plus mashed potatoes, roasted veggies, salad, and store-bought pie.
I don’t understand why the dinner has to be a several-days-of-prep extravaganza. I’m essentially making a regular dinner, only x8 instead of x2.

Reply to LPT: Change the way you do gifts on Christmas morning to make it more about giving than getting by dallassoxfan
I would find that completely cringey, and quite a bit attention-seeking on the part of the giver.
My main issue though is that I think there’s a whole boatload of assumptions there: that the people involved all like each other, everyone has roughly the same spending ability, no one is getting competitive about gift buying, no one gets anxious about the perfect gift, no one is going to feel bad because they very publicly got a kitchen mixer while someone else got an iPad, everyone is comfortable with this (and not shy or introverted).
If all of the above are true, and everyone wants to do it, then go for it. It would absolutely not work for my family though.

Ok is different if you don't feel as comfortable around them all, hope they learn to stop shunning, but if they do they don't deserve "gift" from you
