This is true on both sides… as is standard with any polarisation the extremists are extreme and vocal about pushing their position, while the vast majority don’t comment because it’s obvious that this doesn’t have to be one-size-fits-all.
Some people and jobs benefit from WFH, others benefit from collocating. Lots of people seem to have difficulty understanding that not all jobs are just like their job or just don’t care because they have a preference and want that to prevail for everyone.
I think we’re seeing a selection bias in posters talking about their employers - the ones that are going fully hybrid or remote don’t result in as many posts.

Mine is not that quiet what's yours? Mines one of the WiFi Roomba vacuum models but it is quite loud, and on hardwood
Usually I just schedule it for when I leave which sure beats me regularly vacuuming myself. My biggest annoyance is how hungry it is for cables, tearing down anything that it's attached to...

Reply to Blue Origin makes solar cells out of simulated moon dirt with 'alchemist' project by spacedotc0m
Is this part of a broader strategic move by Blue Origin to move away from the rocket building business, and more into the colony building business? Or are they still very much investing in building their rocket building/launching business?

I want to quickly point out that we already make packaging, shoes, leather and other items from mushrooms. I'm excited for it to start really taking over in the near future, but did want to clarify that we already have some of these products being made at a medium scale.

My robot vac is so quiet that it can hoover in the middle of the night and nobody can hear it. All it needs, is its bin emptying about once a week and to be moved from upstairs to downstairs. Eventually I'll get around to getting one with a mopping feature and have one for upstairs and one for downstairs. But as the house gets hovered twice a day it's always immaculate. A Shark cleaner can't compete, as it would just never get used as much.

I'm at teacher. We are having a serious concerns about students using chat bots to write essays. ...some kids read and edit the product before they turn it in: so they are hard to catch. Others are not so smart it is obvious. The problem for the comes when you put them on a locked out computer [no internet;no file transfer: no cellphone in their lap] or make them write by hand.

> Sigh, again with the pointless usage of hydrogen. This is far less efficient than solar panels and battery storage. Why lose 3x efficiency just to do the hydrogen- fuel cell - electricity conversion when you can just go solar to battery in one shot
Said the Tesla fan (check this posters history). Of course if you're invested in batteries you'll slam any "competition".

Every country will need to make drastic changes to their economic systems, some more than others. To ensure that people have their basic needs met in the future, and so that we benefit together from improvements to science and technology.
Whether that transition happens in a matter that is smooth, efficient and ethical, or slow, chaotic and brutal, will depend on how competent the leaders of tomorrow will be.

My workplace went full remote at the start of Covid, our productivity went through the roof and we had record setting years.
Then we were all forced to return to the office for the same “reasons”, the CEO believed we needed to “collaborate” and engage in “water cooler talk”.
It was a massive failure, productivity dropped, we all saw it as essentially working overtime and taking a pay cut when looking at the time and cost associated with commuting.
I, along with many others, quit. I found another employer who still believes in the efficiency of remote work. Obviously it depends on your field, but they’re still out there. That is who I choose to give my time and energy to. I hope all others who have the ability to do the same.

> I am so sorry this is long as shit & it ends on a downer. It's just a really morose & unpleasant read.
I read it all, though. You're probably tired of hearing it but I'm still sorry for your dad. That sucks.
Anyway... damn. Yeah. You've made excellent points.
I'm a technophile, I believe in progress, and I watch on the daily as outmoded corporate interests stymie or erase technical progress that could become cultural progress. I watch politicians flagrantly ignore scientific evidence for climate change or disease, while watching journalists encourage them.
So, perhaps much of my opinion surrounding AI is derived of those feelings and sympathies. But I think you're right on much, maybe all of what you've said.
So now, I don't know. I don't know the best way forward. I don't think AI is going away. Companies are working out tools to detect AI-generated text, but technological progress also demands the AI-generators get smarter.
Thank you for writing that all out, though.
