What you’re proposing is relatively new exploration and not accepted by main stream psychology. Emotions as we understand them now absolutely do affect our decision making. It is interesting though and perhaps the consensus will change.

>Well emotions is both very valuable and detrimental to human decision making.

Except that they aren't. Your eyes "see" a lion, send signals to your brain. It sends signals to your adrenal glands, they produce adrenaline - you run. Emotions and even your conscious don't participate in the process. AFAIK, there's no scientific proof that we need emotions to function.

One curious experiment on the decision making: https://www.nature.com/articles/news.2008.751

For all we know, our conscious is simply making up good stories for us: https://www.nature.com/articles/483260a

I think you need to clarify exactly how you describe feeling, as it seems like you keep swapping between physical pain and emotion, or at least treat one as if it requires the presence of the other.

I would also like to ask how exactly you would define a 'machine.' If we could recreate a human cell-by-cell, including full creative liberty on how the brain is built and functioned, would it be a machine? Would this humunculous have 'feeling', despite being functionally programmed by it's creators? Is the qualification of a machine that it must be built with inorganic materials?

no because emotions are formed from neurotransmitters, not thoughts. even some people don't experience emotions due to neurotransmitter dysfunction. like people suffering from severe depression or psychosis- they can think their way through emotions and experiences but not actually feel them.

Depends on what you mean by "good." If you mean that level of consistent model fidelity and aesthetics, then the answer is "never" and it only takes one look at VR chat to know why. That's the real metaverse, not whatever Facebook is peddling. Given free reign, people will drown you in fursonas and anime girls that never belonged in the same room together. And that's a good thing, it shouldn't be some sterile environment where people are forced to be part of some specific aesthetic.

If by good you mean widely adopted, I think other responses have addressed that.

Depends on who you ask, we can make predictions all day. Right now tech companies are scrambling to be the first to come out with something that can be integrated into daily life, similar to smartphones. but vr is just too new for it to reach the level of quality seen in fiction anytime soon. I don’t think it’s impossible but it’s gonna be a long time before it reaches that level, no way to pin point an exact year. Even if such technology did come into existence, it would probably be a while before it gets released for the public to use, and even then it’ll most likely be too expensive for the average person.

I am nearly 100% confident that USA will stay a democratic Republic.

Also for all the people in the comments yelling "Lobbyists" I have a question for you.

Can you name a single time the congress has passed a law that the voter base did not want but the corporations did?

Corporate Lobbying does not seem to outweigh voter interests in my perception but I would like to be shown otherwise if possible.
