While you are correct, the amount of water needed for green hydrogen is probably several orders of magnitude below the amount of water that we need to convert to drinking water - so we'll also see way less brine...

Reply to Physicists Say Aliens May Be Using Black Holes as Quantum Computers : ScienceAlert by Gari_305
I imagine the conversation went like this -
Physicists: "There is no credible evidence for extra-terrestrial life."
Science Journalist: "Could aliens be among us and they are just undetectable?"
Physicists: "Psh. I mean if you are going to say that then you might as well say that invisible gnomes are using moonbeams to make chutney. Hell, for all we know aliens could be using black holes as quantum computers."
Science Journalist: ...

Supplementary sails on a ship that also has engines = free fuel!

The following submission statement was provided by /u/nastratin:
It is surprisingly difficult to build a carbon neutral sailing ship. This is even more the case today, because our standards for safety, health, hygiene, comfort, and convenience have changed profoundly since the Age of Sail
The sailing ship is a textbook example of sustainability. For at least 4,000 years, sailing ships have transported passengers and cargo across the world’s seas and oceans without using a single drop of fossil fuels.
If we want to keep travelling and trading globally in a low carbon society, sailing ships are the obvious alternative to container ships, bulk carriers, and airplanes.

For anybody interested in this topic a YouTuber who goes deep into theoretical stuff exactly like this. YouTube handle is Isaac Arthur

What about the energy inputs? I thought that splitting water to produce hydrogen required quite a bit of energy, which is unlikely to be coming from carbon free sources.

You've been able to cryogenically freeze your brain for a couple decades now I believe.
I mean, it's not like I purchased the service but I've noticed that it's been offered for well over 10 years and it feels like about 20 now.

>Battery technology is largely ignored in the mainstream conversation about renewables
I believe that will change very quickly as more countries transition to +50% renewables.

True but we are a very long way from smart highways being anything other than an incredibly tiny percentage of the roads.
Just installing those flyover type tolls on a single highway in my state took YEARS of planning and construction.

So like the little H2 generators you can buy on eBay I don’t think they produce any Cl2

I mean, I can see how this could be possible. Not the tech specifically but the idea. Black holes are super unpredictable to us right now but with the right tools you could likely modify this and get it to do simple calculations. But then further the tech and get actual computing out of the things.

It's the line of thinking I mean. It's not always a big leap to apply the logic of shunning certain behaviours to shunning certain people, especially when you blame said behaviours on particular races. For example, stealing is bad -> "black people steal a lot" -> black people are bad is an easy chain to make, especially if someone who is already racist comes along and wants to manipulate others to join them.

Yes but doing it on an industrial scale will affect the salinity in the area where water is being discharged. It should balance out over time but cause issues in the areas.
