That's actually what I would do, just shave down the parts over the mounting screws that the bracket will hit. Leave the rest of the flange obviously because it holds the box to the drywall.

Old work boxes don't care about drywall thickness.

I believe what you have is a welded steel door frame with integral hinges. This might help you out: https://www.doityourself.com/forum/hardware-fasteners/583281-replacement-hinges-welded-steel-door-frame.html

As others have said, this looks like the hinge might be part of the door frame and won't come out. You could try removing the paint with something like citri-strip on the part of the hinge holding the pin so it looks nicer.

Does your desk already have grommet? You could pop that out and install it through both the desk and mat hole.

The ideal tool (depending on the size of the hole required) would be a chassis punch. Try and find an engineering shop who has them and will make the hole for you.

It should come up with only a bit of effort. But if you’re like everyone else and never use the thing the stopper could be stuck. WD40 might help, but I’ve had luck with CLR too (since the mineral deposits can stick it in place. Remember to pull upwards, and make sure you’re not hitting the top of the overflow, since the linkage does tip outward.
This past summer I helped my dad remove the plumbing off a drain and we beat it out with a hammer.. thankfully the drain assembly was still good and we could replace it. Helps to have an unfinished basement sometimes :)

Step bit as others have said but first I’d put tape where you want the hole and use a razor blade to cut away the leather/leatherette first. That way you don’t mangle the cover while trying to get through the metal.

Do you own this apartment?
Looks like a fire rated steel frame. Common in multi floor apartment buildings.

That is a weird looking hinge. Is it mounted on the part of the door we can't see? As for the part attached to the frame: scribe it with your utility knife, deep enough to get through all the layers of paint on all of the hinges, then hit the hinge with a hammer.

Yea, it’s metal- I can’t uncover anymore paint.

Agreed. It looks like that is part of the metal frame.

Knock out the pin in the center of the hinge with a punch, then scribe around the hinge with a utility knife break the paint loose then you can replace the hinges

Is that metal where you scratched? It is either covered, painted, or part of that frame. Metal door frame?

I have a hog panel held up by two t posts for growing hops. Doubled should work but get tall t posts.

No need to be sorry at all. I appreciate the suggestions. Just assumed that general DIY would be an appropriate place.

Eh, that doesn't look right either. Like, I'd probably put my stained glass up there but not this thing.
Someone suggested Landscaping.

I don't know. I would assume so but eh, I guess it will be better than DIY.
Thanks.

Ah... Bugger. I mean. I suppose there's r/crafts. Don't know if that's the right fit either.

Make sure to get two sizes of grommet. One for the size you want, and one for the size it may end up being.
Might want to tape around where you're drilling as well (both sides!)

The issue is that the cattle panels are made of metal, the t-posts i am going to attach them to is metal... there really isn't a lot of wood involved.

This! Drilling is not the answer here, cut into it with snips or make a die cut with a vise
