When it gets really cold:
- Ice skating on Spy Pond or at the Public Garden
When it snows a lot:
- take a quiet walk at night, the snow keeps it bright outside and it's very cozy
- take the ski train to Wachusett
- take the commuter rail to a small town without worrying about road conditions

See shows - theater, improv asylum, shit faced shakespeare, the orchestra (tickets are around $25 if you’re under 40), concerts, etc. There are a lot of great local venues and shows that are lower cost.
-
bar trivia has been a consistent activity for my friends and I during the winter and a ton of places around the city run it.
-
Leading up to the holidays, Snowport, SOWA holiday market, and going to see the holiday lights in the common are all hits.
-
Ice skating (indoor or outdoor), curling at the liberty hotel for winter sports.
-
Bowling, boda borg, escape rooms
-
museums! I especially recommend the evening events that they throw like ICA First Fridays and Harvard Art Museums at night. Also, I know a lot of people haven’t been to the Harvard Art Museums or their Peabody museum which I highly recommend.
-
This is an “at home” activity, but my friends and I have done cooking nights like dumplings from scratch, hot pot, etc that are fun and more hands on. always been a hit.
-
seeing movies at the local theaters like Coolidge Corner theater and Brattle theater. Beyond normal screenings and indie films, they often do screenings of classic movies, Rocky horror, and other fun things like that.
-
Maybe an obvious choice to go out to eat, but we make an effort to try places we’ve never been in different parts of the city so we do a bit more exploring.
-
Take advantage of days with (relatively) warmer weather and sun to go explore a different neighborhood with a hot chocolate.

When I was in college last year I loved going to Boston common to see the scenery. Definitely an amazing sight.

As soon as they are done sweeping you can move back onto that side with very little risk.

December is the last month. It used to be November years ago. Climate change?

From the website:
Can I park on the street after the sweeper goes by?
You should only park on the street after the posted time on the street sweeping sign. Even though you may have seen the sweeper go by once, it may need to go by for a second pass. Also, the City's catch basin cleaning program is closely coordinated with monthly street sweeping in order to reduce additional parking disruptions, and that equipment may be scheduled during the same posted time period.

The official answer is that they sometimes come back for a second sweep, if the roads are particularly dirty.

Aren't they done with street cleaning by November? Doesn't it stop over winter?

Once the sweeping is done you're good to go. They aren't coming back. I do it all the time and have never had an issue

Just wanted to follow up and thank everyone. At this point, after just three days, I've received over 80 responses in the survey! Really blown away by the participation.
I especially want to thank those of you who were willing to follow up with me one-on-one. I've reached out to a few of those folks.
These responses are going to be extremely helpful for my work. If there's interest, I'll look at circling back later this winter to share the aggregate results with the community.
Thank you all again and enjoy the holidays!

The ticket/tow people precede the street sweepers (so that the street is empty for sweeping). If they've already swept your streets, the ticket/tow people are off staying ahead of the sweepers...
...but having said that, the normal ticket people are still out there...

Rolling the dice that the parking enforcement doesn't issue a ticket. Usually the tow people are only on standby at 8am

In addition to those already mentioned, there's also the Kennedy pool in Somerville and the Boys and Girls Club in Arlington.

As a former competitive swimmer, I will warn that both the Cambridge and Somerville YMCAs have odd-ball 20-yard pools. If you are swimming in more of a competitive style, it's something to remember about how you'll be doing 1 extra flip turn for every 100 yards.

MIT is easy enough to get a membership if you know someone who went there (they just have to sign a form). The pools are the nicest around (better than Harvard’s). War Memorial is the public swim option for Cambridge residents but it has weird hours - so it either works for you or it doesn’t. The Central Square Y has a pool in the basement; I think it’s three lanes. It really isn’t a bad pool but it can be tough when it’s crowded
