Can confirm, used to work at EF! Lingo is open to the public and has great food at very reasonable prices. Also it turns into a full bar at 4pm M-F, again open to the public

I think they’re looking for a situation where they can go independently, take their time, possibly do work at etc. Not necessarily even be social..

Yep, the cafe at Sloan is pretty decent, plus a nice area outside on the Memorial Drive side to sit in the good weather. The buildings just recently opened back up to the public, so you should be able to get in via the Main Street entrance.

My annual vehicle inspection is around the same time as parking renewal, and I’ve had good luck asking the guy at the inspection place if he could scrape off the old parking sticker at the same time. Takes them 2 seconds with their scraper tool

Some of them allow employees to bring guests a limited number of times per month. I suppose one could schmooze their way in that way.

As an MIT grad student, I can tell you the MIT situation. The Vassar Street cafeteria (in the Stata Center) at MIT isn’t great, agreed. Pre-pandemic the Broad Institute cafeteria across the street from the Stata Center was good. There also used to be a little lunch setup in one of the biotech buildings next to Stata, but I’m not sure it came back after the pandemic.I think Sloan also has a cafeteria? Finally, the MIT student center has a cafeteria-like set-up on the 2nd floor, but the whole building is inaccessible due to a burst water pipe.
If you want a nice corporate cafeteria, befriend someone at Google and have them invite you over for the free lunch. That is pretty nice.

There are cafeterias in some biotech buildings in Alewfie where there are multiple tenants (as in, the building isn’t just one large pharma). The one at Discovery park isn’t good, but there’s another down the street from the station that is!

Education First building in East Cambridge has a wonderful patio in the spring/summer that's open to the public. Not sure if they do lunch, but after work they sell cheap pitchers of beer and bar food like nachos

There are some public spaces in Harvard with good food: Clover in the Science Center and a bunch of stuff in the Smith Campus Center, but all of the "cafeterias" are for Harvard affiliates. I imagine the same is true for MIT.

The cheap and good (subsidized) corporate cafeterias you are looking for are for employees only. They don't allow members of the public in. If it were public, they wouldn't subsidize it.

Right. Like, a corporate cafeteria requires that you work there. It's kind of the point of the whole thing! I'm not kink shaming here, I'm kink asking why.
OP, get invited to someone's office. Kendall Square's Google office has some pretty good food, though honestly all corporate cafeterias have minimised their offerings since the pandemic began.

Harvard campus has a couple kind of like that but not 100% cafeteria. Northwest Science building has something.

I don't know the rules in Cambridge, but in Boston you can be cited for not removing the old ones
It's super petty, but if you get pulled over by a jerk it's not worth the extra fine
