BIFL is cheaper in the long run, but more costly up front, and we have a failing capitalist system where few people have much money, but also many people want "instant gratification" and are unwilling to do without and save until they can afford BIFL. The toaster in my kitchen is from 1952. It costs the average working person in the "United" States a weeks pay. Our vacuum in from 1970, and costs the average worker a month's pay. Hard to imagine the broke, and yet entitled, and impatient person today buying stuff like that.

As you are used to macs, that is a safe bet.

But keep in mind that the lifetime might not be limitied by the hardware. You do not want to be using a internet connected device that is not getting security updates. Apples policy is to only fully support the current releases with security updates. If you really want to go BIFL, linux is your best option. Ubuntu patches security updates for 10years for each release, and all devices (with some rare exceptions) can get the latest releases. There are also options that are more suitable to really old hardware when your pc can not keep up with the latest features.

If you are going to study anything IT/software/computer science it is a perfect fit. For other fields you will have to check that the software you need will be avaliable. But if you mostly want to browse the web and write essays, a linux laptop will do that for a decade easy.

If you are comfortable with installing the os yourself, https://frame.work is an option very in-line with this sub, they are not tested by time yet though.

Lenovo and Dell sell pre-installed linux. https://system76.com/ and https://www.tuxedocomputers.com/ are dedicated vendors.

A used ThinkPad is a classic budget friendly choice if you are comfortable installing linux yourself or know someone that can help you.

Depends - is/was the sound quality good, or even adequate? People might tend to go for a known "good", even if short-lived, rather than experiment with an unknown brand, or even a well-known brand but one they haven't had any experience with.

I twisted my partners arm into buying an IKEA bed frame and he was the laughing stock of his company for weeks! The companies he’s worked for that were on truly legitimate, offered insurance for customers belongings being moved, but every one of them has contained a waiver/exception for IKEA furniture because a large chunk of what they sell is cheap MDF/particleboard that breaks far too easily. I bought a metal frame and don’t regret it, it’s exactly what you’re looking for, except they discontinued it like two years ago.
