I received a Merkur Futur for Father's Day a few years ago. It's adjustable, which I use for around my upper lip. I can't imagine needing to get something for hundreds of dollars. With that said, I'm not one of the r/wickededge people. I bought into safety razors because the blades were cheap and I originally got a razor from Maggard, a brush, a bowl, a holder, an assortment of blades and a few soaps. I settled on my favorites and I've been using it all for the better part of a decade now. After I got the Futur, the Maggard became a part of a travel kit, so it still gets used several times a year.

I still use my ICF-C240. My mom got it for me before I started highschool, not sure exactly when, but I must have been about 9 or 10 years old, so maybe the mid to late 80s? Absolutely love the thing. Keeps great time. Nice red display that's easy to read when it's dark or light, and not too bright. It's perfect.

About 10 years ago I bought a brand new C218 (not sure what's with the earlier model number) so my wife and I can both have a clock on our night stands. I hate it. The clock skews by like 10 minutes every year or two. And the display is this ugly bright green that keeps me up at night. I had to buy one of those darkening stickers, and now it's too dark to read in the daytime. Junk.

If washed and maintained properly it's far more than 5-6 years. I have pillows over a decade old that are still great. As with any BIFL object it requires thought of care.

I don't use Vaseline and last I knew pill capsules are mostly made of gelatin or cellulose, neither of which are petroleum byproducts.

Microplastics and petroleum offgassing is a real issue. Sleeping on unknown polymer should be a concern.
