I mean, most of the Swiss companies brutally overcharge for what they're doing. If you're charging $5k+ for a watch, it'd be inexcusable for it *not* to last decades.

The Japanese seem to value honest pricing, and make excellent watches that hold up. You need to filter out the ones that aren't going to age well, as they're willing to take cosmetic changes the Swiss would be appalled by, but my Citizen Promaster Diver I'd put head to head with an Omega Seamaster at 1/10th the cost.

Well my grandad actually liked the forester, I didn’t think he would like it since it is a SUV and he only had ever had sedans and trucks. As for the gauge to be able to monitor the temperature while driving in case the thermostat fails or you are pushing too hard. But he is happy with the forester. Very easy to get in an out and apparently has a good sound system. The guy we bought it from offered to install the gauge for free. Personally or looks ugly but he is happy. Has everything in his wish list.

I can't speak more highly about my bedsheets by Kotn. They are a Canadian company (I'm Canadian) and their bedsheets are the one thing I let myself splurge on. I've had them now for 2 years and they are as good now as the day I bought them - honestly maybe better as I use them 80+% of the time, and they have softened and are so cozy without signs of wear. They are expensive but worth it, I recommend you check them out! I love their quality, colours, plus they actually do good things for the people they work with (I spent a lot of time researching decently ethically sourced bedsheets before purchasing), and they are all drier friendly. Also, they make clothing that is (surprise) cotton and top notch. Super soft, great quality, long lasting. 10/10 recommend them for your next set of sheets!

Target has an every day line, reasonably priced (sheet set +2k pillowcases for $39USD) which are silky-soft and wear like iron! I believe they are microfiber. They are NOT the jersey ones target carries....I don't like those - too hot!

Too bad about the Forester. It sounds like your relative is looking for a reassuring interface, but here's the thing: the functionality didn't actually go away, it just changed form. ( Just about everything he/she knows about a car has changed form.)

This sounds like either they didn't like the vehicle, and used the gauge as a convenient excuse, OR someone needs to explain to them how engine temperatures are reported in a modern vehicle (because they are, they must be).

Valid point. Most people aren't conscientious about filter replacement, as I'm learning. I've looked at the water quality report for my town. The reason I'm looking for a solution is in part because of the lead in that report and because my state is known for having lead-heavy water in a town not too far away, that rhymes with glint.

I just posted about my comphy sheets about 10 minutes before your post. I guess I sounded too marketing department-esque though. We’ve had them for longer than 2 years and they still feel brand new. They are not cotton though so if your heart is set on cotton, maybe not for you.

just to throw in a new machine option that isn't a speed queen - i bought a maytag commercial (MVWP575GW) about a year ago and really like it. very quick wash cycles, feels very well built, controls are all non-touchscreen. 10 year warranty for parts, 5 years service. only time will tell if it truly holds up, but its being sold as basically a speed queen alternative.

I got a set from someone on Craigslist, inspected it, it was clean & working... Brought it home & they were infested with German cockroaches! I will never get used appliance again from someones house, you never know where they're truly coming from.

Before using filters, I would evaluate water quality to assess the situation. A researcher in our neighborhood collected water samples from houses in the same area supplied by the same water source. Her results were surprising; almost all houses in her sample that used water filtration had worse water quality than houses without filtration systems, except for one house. She concluded that it is probably due to infrequent filter replacement or a very long duration between replacements causing bacterial growth, resulting in worse water quality than those without filtration. So I guess replacing the filters at the recommended intervals is necessary if you use any filtration systems.
