Reply to Best set of chef knives ? by MatineHen
I've been a chef for almost 20yrs. I've had many chef's knifes. The one I always reach for and if I had to pick just one is my victorinox knife's. Love the wood handled ones. 😁👍

I’d suggest a good knife and cutting board TBH. The size/area you put the food in is so small, you would have to cut the veggies or whatever anyway. At that point just spend the extra 10 seconds and cut the rest with the knife.

I'd use a nakiri over an usaba for general vegetable use, especially you want to tackle any root veggies as an usaba is thin enough and it's single sided blade is meant for precision work or delicate veggies. Due to the nature of an usaba using it on desne veggies can result in its blade dulling quicker than expected.
Two great Japanese vegetable knives but one is meant for more general purposes vs delicate work.

I got one of these and it’s like you said. The cutting area is small, so you have to pull out a knife and cutting board anyway to cut stuff down to fit. At that point, just keep chopping. And I remember to took some force to use it. It’s not a smooth motion. I think we used it once and gave it away.

Check out the fairphone: https://www.fairphone.com/en/ Don't have one myself but my Dad has and loves it. Uses a standard Android OS but it's designed to be repairable and upgradeable. Definitely not the cheapest but they are literally designed to be BIFL so worth considering. There is another company doing a similar thing but the name escapes me rn.

Tile Slim claims 3 years battery life. Also in the event of someone actually stealing it I’mnot sure you’d want it to beep, but that’s just me. Will just be a signal to them to toss the tracker.

A food processor is a better option, but still won't give you consistency. This is what they're after... https://www.webstaurantstore.com/50129/dicers.html

Lol I just googled it, what a ridiculous design. A regular toaster or a regular toaster oven would be totally fine.

You'd need to build one yourself (i.e. it can't be done). They're disposable.

What size do you wear? I’ll be honest, I was about to call bullshit on this until I saw the laces burning halfway through the eyelets. As far as new boots, I’d try on a pair as their sizing may not be consistent with what it was 10-12 years ago. Thorogood is kinda goofy with sizing as most people actually need to go wider it seems. Otherwise check out r/workboots, though most will just tell you to get Thorogoods or $700 Nicks/Whites. RoseAnvil on YouTube is also worth checking out.

Bring them into a shoe/boot smith. They’ll be able to breathe new life into them to keep them going for another decade or more. I have the same pair of Thorogood boots as you do, and they’re as good as they were when I first bought them many moons ago!

Came here to say this.
Investing in a good knife and simply working on the skill would be the best "BIFL" route.
The only exception I can think of would be someone who is unable to use a knife properly due to one handicap or another.

Tile makes one that fits in your wallet, but it is completely disposable. When the battery dies, you are just supposed to buy a new one.

I looked into this recently, as an android phone user, and there really isn't a viable alternative to airtags. The android-based ones are all bluetooth-based, and seem to require charging.
Airtags seem unfortunately to be pretty unique, so I went with them and paired them to my iPad.

Exactly! You already have to get the knife out to cut the veg to fit, so I never saw the point of involving extra steps and machinery to the process

Trust me, my family used one of those things and they suck! Like other people mentioned you don't have sharp blades after a while. If you have more solid vegetables like carrots it's way too easy that the carrots get stuck and bend the blades. after that you can try to pull it out or cut the stupid green plastic at the top and search for little plasticparts between your vegetables. A friend of mine bought one of those cheap around christmas and what should i tell: same problems.
Buy some good knives
