If you properly maintain something, or should last way longer than average.
I think that’s the thing most people don’t do. They expect something to last forever while completely neglecting/abusing it.
My Prius is 13 years old and I’ve driven it across the country coast to coast seven times. I take good care of it so it should last another 13 years.
But cars should be replaced eventually just because safety features improve so much.

I bought the HF3520/60 at least ten years ago and it’s been great- so lives up to the BIFL.
The new model seems too expensive. If you’ve never had a sunrise alarm, I’d recommend a cheaper option or scale down your must haves. My personal opinion is that a good transition from soft to bright is more important than accurate colors.
If you have had other sunrise alarms, then you definitely know what you want and Philips will probably be the best.

Starting its life in the desert is the key. There are none of these left in the northeast. Keep undercoated and keep a spare head gasket in the shed.

You can use a $15 dimming, color changing smart bulb

I fear you have made a terrible mistake, tempting the sock-eating monster to devour the left sock of all pairs.
Spending a lifetime with un-assorted socks sounds like hell.

Fiberglass handles are better. I've snapped a few wood handles in my day.

0°F is equivalent to -17°C, which is 255K.

Lifelong Minnesota here. I prefer using a steel "snow pusher" for clearing the driveway and sidewalks. If you can handle the extra weight, I recommend the 30" Bully Tools snow pusher with the fiberglass handle. They also make a 24" version.
I inhereted an older steel pusher from my father and it's 35+ years old. In my experience, the plastic ones break when it's sub 0°F and you can't scrape/chisel packed ice with them. Metal can take much more abuse.

The clock on my wall has gears and is older than any human alive. I think that counts as BIFL...

These jeeps have a nearly indestructible 4.0L straight 6. If maintained they would probably run forever

I wonder how long cars of this generation will last. It might actually get to BIFL point

Show shovels are kind of like work gloves. If you are getting 10+ years out of them you aren't using them much.
Metal will last longer but it'll break your back.

I’ve two, first one is from 2004

I've realized I've had the same snow shovel for more than 12 years. I have no clue where I bought it, I recall it was more than I wanted to spend, but I needed one that didn't have a really long handle as I'm short. I made sure I took it with me when I got divorced. It's never cracked or chipped. Just a basic blue shovel. I'm amazed at the abuse it's taken, and still performs really well.

Second this. I've had mine since 2008 or 2009. As good as new. Only break it out when the snow is deep enough. For lighter snow or smaller areas we use the snow plow both are great.
