It's just another item on an already long list. Sure, the internet and smart phones are entirely new creatures, but they haven't completely supplanted all previous obsessions. That's all. A new form of escapism. Before the internet and smartphones, people filled the empty spaces in their brains with TV, movies, addictive substances, physical activity, socializing, work, and so on. But they all served the same function as phones do now.
