You mentioned that your employer doesn't offer a match, so you might consider contributing to a traditional 401k or a Roth 401k. A traditional 401k allows you to take a tax advantage when saving because your contributions are deductible on a pre-tax basis. a Roth 401k, on the other hand, saves after taxes, but you will enjoy tax-free earnings and withdrawals at retirement.
In addition, you can also consider Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), which also offer tax benefits, similar to a 401k. If you qualify, you can also contribute to a traditional IRA or Roth IRA. I wonder about the connection between how happy your upbringing was, and how comfortable you found the 'old world' that you grew up in, and excitement levels regarding technological and societal change. As someone that found little good in the world of my childhood and teens, it's all too easy for me to see it change. If one were to love the world of their earlier years, though, maybe it's a lot harder to see change as a positive.

This used to be normal during rush hour pre pandemic….trains would come every 3-5 mins it felt like. And if you had to switch lines, it wasn’t such an issue. Now you have to wait 10+ mins for one line and then another 10+ mins for the other line. All in pretty crowded trains during rush hours. More trains is a legitimate ask.
